How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

Whether they knew or not, this is the Brexit they voted for.
The dreadful irony is that we remainers seem to have known better than they did what they were voting for.
If you engaged with them on the subject and explained the obvious problems, you were called everything from ‘project fear’ all the way through to ‘Britain haters’.
And here we are.

What this sorry episode has done as much as anything is expose our political system and the people within it to be utterly unfit for purpose.

There is no other conclusion to draw other than this development coming as a shock to anyone who voted for Brexit. They must have, by the application of logic, have believed the opposite.

To me, that is an astonishing thing to believe, even in 2016. To actually think we had a political class that was up to the job of ‘taking back control’.

We have put more power and responsibility in the hands of a bunch of clowns like Badenoch.

Rather than appropriating our sovereignty, membership of the EU actually spared us the worst excesses of our domestic politics.

We have essentially handed the keys of the asylum to the lunatics.
Yes.
You’ve taken back control.

It’s like kids running the crèche.

We are, and we’re stuck with it I’m afraid.

The pre-1973 levels of sovereignty and being able to operate in relative isolation simply aren’t feasible in the modern world.

I strongly felt that those pining for this were going to be severely disappointed as it simply isn’t possible in 2023 (or 2016).

Quite apart from the economics of it. I don’t feel I’ll be around to see it, but the future problems of the world are not going to be solved by separatism.
Globalism and greater mutually beneficial cooperation will be needed to tackle what’s coming.
From climate change and food shortages and mass migration to god knows what. The rise of the right wing? Whatever.
Not a good time to go it alone.

Even a few years ago there were plenty of capable and responsible members of the Tory party in significant posts. But to serve in the current government you had to be a supporter of Brexit. To be a supporter of Brexit you had to be a fool. It was obvious then how it would play out and sure as shit, it did and it continues to. We are be genuinely and without hyperbole governed by a mess of daft men and women.

The malaise goes far deeper than that, but yes, the present landscape has certainly accentuated it.

Jaguar Land Rover being bribed half a billion quid to stay in the UK. Let the fuck that sink in.
That’s not money for R&D or expansion and job creation or any of that innovation or constructive nonsense.
Oh no.
This is begging them not to bugger off to Europe in yet another taxpayer funded brexit bailout.
How much worse can they get?
