This is why referenda on such complex issues should never be allowed. People have neither the time nor the inclination to study the vast details of such a decision, and so vote on the basis of ignorance and emotion.

Referenda are only suitable for things like choosing Miss UK.

The silliest part of all of that, is that if he'd genuinely been living in Italy and paying tax there before Brexit and been quick off the mark to apply for a visa, he'd have gotten one. Ditto for all the UK immigrants in Spain. These people were either too arrogant to realise they needed a visa and missed their window and now have to apply as non-EU or they can't prove they were resident before Brexit as they were off the grid paying no tax.
His best bet now is probably to hope he has an Irish grandparent. Hope he doesn't.

It didn't really take much thinking about to understand that we would be worse off outside the EU than in.
Idiots, dreamers and the misguided have ruined the futures of so many here in the UK.
I am just hoping that ways can be found to regain some of the lost trust between this part of Europe and the rest of the EU.
