How do you go about tracing someone?

I need to find an old friend who emigrated to Oz in 2008?
Closest I've managed is a dormant Fb account that's not been touched in years, and messages don't appear to have been read.

Any help/advice much appreciated, I don't want the expense of hiring a PI.
