Great Post , and thanks for that .
Could you ,as your memory of the era is insightful.....explain the Terry Paine question. He was at Southampton in the 2nd division at same time as Bell at City ...but Paine was picked for the world cup squad ....even tho a lower league player ...maybe just due to lack of quality options in his winger position..
I'm aware he played extremely consistently for Southampton FC back in the day becoming their club appearance record holder 516 league games iirc....but don't know much about him
Terry Paine was a winger. A goalscoring winger. Alf Ramsey played with wingers.
TP had been a 'star man' at Southampton for quite a while and although a second division player, he was popular with football fans. Remember that in the late 50s / early 60s, football supporters were probably as inclined to follow top players rather than be obsessed by those their own club. People would make more effort to attend a local match if say, Stanley Matthews, or Billy Wright was playing.
Colin Bell was 6 or 7 years younger than Terry Paine, and was a largely 'unknown' 20 year old at Bury (who weren't exactly a 'fashionable' club).
Colin was also a midfield player. Look at Ramsey's WC squad... he had Stiles, Ball, Charlton, Peters, Flowers, Callaghan, and Eastham. All established players. Peters was the only one who would have been considered a 'gamble' at that time, and he was 22 and established in the West Ham side.
It wasn’t Colin Bell's time. That came in 1970, and even then he was competing with the very popular Bobby Charlton.
1966 was too soon. Colin was still developing into a very good player. He became a great player over 1966/67.
