How good was Yaya?!

Great Post , and thanks for that .
Could you ,as your memory of the era is insightful.....explain the Terry Paine question. He was at Southampton in the 2nd division at same time as Bell at City ...but Paine was picked for the world cup squad ....even tho a lower league player ...maybe just due to lack of quality options in his winger position..
I'm aware he played extremely consistently for Southampton FC back in the day becoming their club appearance record holder 516 league games iirc....but don't know much about him

Terry Paine was a winger. A goalscoring winger. Alf Ramsey played with wingers.

TP had been a 'star man' at Southampton for quite a while and although a second division player, he was popular with football fans. Remember that in the late 50s / early 60s, football supporters were probably as inclined to follow top players rather than be obsessed by those their own club. People would make more effort to attend a local match if say, Stanley Matthews, or Billy Wright was playing.

Colin Bell was 6 or 7 years younger than Terry Paine, and was a largely 'unknown' 20 year old at Bury (who weren't exactly a 'fashionable' club).

Colin was also a midfield player. Look at Ramsey's WC squad... he had Stiles, Ball, Charlton, Peters, Flowers, Callaghan, and Eastham. All established players. Peters was the only one who would have been considered a 'gamble' at that time, and he was 22 and established in the West Ham side.

It wasn’t Colin Bell's time. That came in 1970, and even then he was competing with the very popular Bobby Charlton.

1966 was too soon. Colin was still developing into a very good player. He became a great player over 1966/67.

Funny how he regularly got the same two sisters in for fun and games while people you know were working on his house. Quite a coincidence.
“Millionaire footballer is massive shagger: Shocker”

Sisters as in ladies of colour, not literally

I imagine he also had them round quite often when the lads weren’t working on his house

Loads of us working class in Manchester know workies who do jobs for footballers in the Cheshire belt, most of them can barely change a lightbulb.

I’ve got one bunch of mates who do Christmas lights for Prem players in the Cheshire footballer belt every year, it’s become an expensive one-upmanship and social media thing among the footballers

Well I hope Yaya’s lawyer is as bad as his agent

Yaya was possibly the signing that - even more than Merlin - signalled to the world that Manchester City was here to stay at the top table of English and European football.

He was a fucking beast of a player and scored some wonderful goals for us.

My favourite is the one at Wembley against Sunderland, but the brace against Newcastle are memorable for their importance, as was the one that finally broke Villa's resistance.

A fantastic footballer, whose like we probably won’t see again.

World class and extremely intimidating for opponents.

When he decided we were winning a game, we were winning a game. He loved doing that in big, important games.

That goal in the league cup v Sunderland was his best imo.

To think, we had him, Kev, David and Fern in midfield together at one point is fucking insane.

When the goal against Sunderland went in, I literally couldn’t believe my eyes for a split second.

The ball looked as if it was going over, but it dipped at the last second and nestled in the back of the net.

Well I’m sure my story is only the the tip of the iceberg, and a Pandora’s Box that Yaya wouldn’t want opening
But if you want to grass me to his lawyers, then crack on. You do you
Weird flex
What do you mean grass you? I was tongue in cheek referring to what Yaya’s lawyer might say if he was reading through here, and then suggesting Yaya’s lawyer might be about as useful as his agent. Grass is a strange take on that. Whatever floats your boat

For four or five years, he was an absolute beast. That 13/14 season was probably his peak while he was with us. Ballon D'Or level displays, in my opinion. It has to be said, though; for the last 12-18 months, he was faxing (younger Bmers, ask your parents) in performances. Which a lot on here seem to have forgotten. And, of course, it didn't end well; the whole cakegate nonsense, and him implying that Pep was racist in his team selections. For me, it tarnished his legacy. Compare the way he left to the likes of Sergio, Merlin, Zabba and Dinho. Players from the same era as him. That gobshite of an agent didn't help his cause. But, iirc, Yaya never told him to STFU. Which implies that he was speaking with Yaya's tacit approval.

No Jim
No one's forgotten his poorer performances
Has it ever crossed your mind tha after playing in 6 countries in league cup European cup and international matches ,over a decade he was probably knackered?.

There is no shame in that ..

The other negative stuff you refer to was off the pitch.....maybe it's just me but I tend to ignore ,perhaps wrongly the media shit show with his agent...I can't prove what was really said / meant ..I'm not really interested...all I know is that he was the greatest Footballer I ever saw live and he helped my team to another level with his incredible winning mentality.

I'm sure there have been parts of your life where you weren't functioning at your absolute best? Does that tarnish your legacy ?
We are talking about someone who terrorized utd and brought the highest level of central midfield play to our shores....
Why folks need to go on about his off field stuff I really don't know

No one ever brings up for example Mick Doyle or Ken Barnes off field stuff.never ever mentioned on here apart from me
Why is that ...and there will be other city greats like Billy Meredith Carlos tevez ( going on strike !!??) etc etc
But some folk seem to want to concentrate on the negative
It's what he did on the effing pitch that counts
Players fall out with managers all the time
Pep has fallen out/ frozen out loads of top class players
All of them can't be wrong .....

All I'm trying to do is defend the best player I ever saw play for any team .and it was a privilege to have done so.
As a mod on here I suggest you don't pile on the negative stuff re a Footballer sorry global ambassador of the game who's career history probably makes your own a little irrelevant.

That just about nails it,thanks for that.

It is ridiculous in all honesty. He won us the FA cup in that season, he also played a massive part in the Aguero season. Newcastle away was another level. And then in the Pellegrini season Yaya just decided to win the Premier League by himself. He is a complete enigma.

Sums him up perfectly.
