How good were Pink Floyd?

Syd era for me. Piper At The Gates of Dawn and the run of early singles are superb. Love his odd scratchy guitar style and his very English vocal style.
I don’t enjoy that era anywhere near as much, but I respect it and what they did. They were really a different band then weren’t they.

I’m not comparing them in any way musically, but it sometimes puts me in mind of what happened with Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac.

I agree…in fact I feel there is almost a need to like the Syd era stuff more…that it’s cooler or something, when in actual fact, it’s fuckin hard to listen to. They then had some amazing albums….then it just went bland (after Waters left….and even his solo stuff is boring)

I love Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Apart from the Stethoscope track it's great. I think pretty much everything Syd did with Floyd was top notch. Even stuff like Apples and Oranges. Saucerful of Secrets has some fantastic stuff on it too.

Syd Barrett's solo albums though are not great.

Agree with virtually all that pal.

What I would say though is that my favourite official live “Pink Floyd” album is actually Waters solo one from his 97-99 “comeback” world tour, Live- In The Flesh, and on that album his solo tracks from Amused To Death stand up really really well alongside the Floyd tracks.

Not a Floyd fan but this is spectacular.
Bowie does his bit then steps back to admire the brilliance.
Not often Bowie is outalented but he's like a star struck kid here.
Great production.

Took a while to “get” Bowie’s vocal there…must be a difficult key for him, by then you can just hear Bowie being Bowie….and not just copying Waters…very cool

Pink Floyd didn’t get me up until the album Echoes. Ummagumma was too dark for me. And than there was Dark Side Of The Moon and that was it. Got addicted up until Division Bell. After that my intrest faded. Still love to listen to Pink Floyd with DSOTM and WYWH my favourite albums of the band. So yes. They were really good imo.
