How intimidating was Maine Road ??

c,mon de niro when we were 16/18 that was a big part of match day, especially if you were brought up and lived in salford.getting to the game and home again was taking your life in your own hands, more so when you had a scarve round each wrist and one round your neck, usually a crimson and blue silk one, happy days, salford blues we are here ! !

-- Tue May 11, 2010 7:48 pm --

god i miss maine rd,drinking lager under the steps of the old kippax, middle of winter with just a city shirt on(and jeans of course !)

I take it then you weren't born in that era and it's a subject that you have little knowledge of apart from reading a 'micky francis' book? A dart in the head would have been considered quite tame compared to what could have happened to you at certain away games.

I have no knowledge of that era and I don't pretend to. It's not going to change my opinion that anyone who throws a dart into a crowd or stabs people is a twat though. You might enlighten me with some of your experiences so you can demonstrate just how bad it was. I'm guessing you're carrying gunshot wounds as a minimum, yes?

Take a day off will you and bury your head in some Engels again. Surely you've a dissertation to do or something on the current political climate after watching pickfords turn up for Mr Brown.

I wouldn't believe what you read in those books. If you read the book of every mob in the land, then no one would have been run, because no mob every got run... apparently.

Some of the accounts are so laughably off-the-mark, it's a joke.

Arsenal's infamous firm has a website - www.wearetheherd.com.

And some people write books and they weren't even there at the events they're detailing. That's even more laughable.

I remember some Bournemouth fans outside asking me where the nearest pub was.I sent them to the Parkside, one of them asked me if they would be OK.I burst out laughing & said 'you do know where you are don't you?' To be fair to them I saw them in the Parkside having a pint.

Why can't you just tell me some of your experiences and stop bringing my degree (which is finished incidentally - dissertation done and dusted) into it because it has fuck all to do with anything being discussed here?

here's a classic from the early 80s, mate of mine bought a nice 2nd hand car brooklands capri in british racing green think a 3Ltr,full leather trim anyway went in to watch the game and came back to the car only to find the interior trim seats the lot had vanished scratching heads thinking how the hell are we getting back home which was a 50 mile trip, we bought one of these little primary school wooden chairs from the 2nd hand shop so we could drive it back

I've got too many stories to tell!

Miss the place so much! still go regularly to alvinos on great western street for a pattie to remind me of the matchday experience whenever i'm working in the area.

Anyway a couple of things spring to mind.
once me and about 8 mates were walking from the parkway onewearing city colours when a bloke and his two mates came over and asked if they could possibly walk with us. they were norwich fans and all were grey in colour shitting it! they walked with us as we passed gangs of black lads hanging around with bandanas covering their faces. Felt dead sorry for them!

Another time was in a pub and 4 spurs lads were at the bar and on the phone early doors when 10 lads came in with bats and battered them all in the pub. Holts pub ( claremont?)

Saw a female 40 odd liverpool fan in the back of a van waving a bit of banter on a cold dark saturday evening leaving the ground. someone appeared with a brick from an alleyway and threw it through the window. a horrible sight to see claret all over her face as they drove off!

Yes I've got great memories but many not so good. It was a nasty place for away fans .

City fans could cause chaos. there was no real cctv away from the ground in the surrounding streets and city could take full advantage. the cops were ineffective away from the ground

Thank you to the people who are actually willing to tell their stories. :)

I know I'm venturing slightly off topic with this but I thought I'd post it anyway. Sure most of you recognise this from the final programme at Maine Road. Just love the bit about the 12-year-old Moss Siders pushing a four poster bed down the road at 3 AM.

that was the manchester deby at the swamp.

It was at the swamp. It was a 'mixed race' City fan in a scarf and denim jacket, as I remember. I was with my Dad not so far away. I was so young that I just thought it was normal although it is one of my earliest City memories and has obviously stayed with me.

This one was as I say, may have even been late 60's, I was stood on the R/H side of the steps and can see it now, after that I tried going to the game on my scooter and wore my crash helmet, but took it off because the sound was muffled
