i think what helped make it intimidating was the fact you would hear lots of noise, sometimes without anyone seemingly around, especially down the alleys.

his name is colin bell and from bury he did come, to play for old joe mercers team, back in division one, and when you come to maine rd, you'll always see a smile, we're the best team in the land, which know one can deny, na na na na

sorry about that, made me think of maine rd ha.
Steve, you must of been 11 when we last played there! ha ha

just a tad older ;), but my first game dad sung it going down an alley and out of no where the maine stand appeared.

A number of players also said that Maine Road was particularly intimidating due to the Kippax being a side rather than an end like most grounds. Away teams' wingers and backs would get the full force of the Kippax along most of the length of the pitch rather than just at one end.

The surrounding area with its alleys and warrens would of been very intimidating for away fans particularly in night games,i disagree about inside the ground,it could be very quite apart from the big games.

I remember some chelsea fans getting in the Kippax in the early 70's, being escorted out by police one of them had a dart sticking out of his head ,they never tried that one again

although maine rd was scary place for some supporters, even MCFC supporters were a little intimidated by the little kids that were supposed to be looking after your car, if you didn't give them a few pennies, you would come back to NO tyres NO wipers, scratches on your car. and if you did give em money, soon as your out of sight they would piss off. That was before and after running the gauntlet inside.

Was a blue with dart in the head if my memory serves me well.

Me dad use to live facing maine road and he's told me a few disturbing things thats happened before and after games round there, he said the locals were always bad for picking off away fans in the alley ways and robbing them. Like one time he remembers a few lads robbing a scouser off his clothes 1 day as they'd just bin abroad in europe and were wearing all designer gear they'd brought back.

I can only hazard a guess but I'd say very intimidating purely because of the area, a very blue but very rough area, and because of the streets and alleys surrounding the ground. Just a staggering amount of opportunities to ambush opposition fans whilst avoiding police intervention and escaping to fight another day.
