How invested in politics are you and how does it affect you?

Finding myself more and more glued to politics and know it's unhealthy, spend far to much time in here, checking BBC/Sky regularly, listen to LBC all the time, social media feed is all divisive politics ... been trying to take a break from it all but it is addictive and constantly there.

Also another aspect is that one of my brothers has fallen down the MAGA rabbit hole, his algorithms are clearly pro Trump stuff and he is posting Kirk videos etc to his feed - tried to argue back on a couple his posts but it's pointless and there's no getting through to him, we now reached a point where we can't discuss politics but was close to falling out.

anyhow. that's off my chest. how about you ?

Yep it's poisonous as fuck, I'm looking forward to moving away and not having it in my life as I won't be able to vote or anything in my new country for years anyway and will be too preoccupied to care. Sad seeing family members posting memes about shooting people on boats or other offensive stuff but what can you do eh I just don't engage with it anymore.
 
Never taken much interest in politics, my view has largely been they're all in it for themselves and all as bad as each other. Thats changed now though, because some are definitely worse than the others and thats ultimately bad news for the ordinary man in the street

Trouble is this is all going to sideways pretty quick, if Trump in the next few months basically declares himself the law and it’s his rule or you’re fucked, what then does the world do? Does he start bullying other nations to do as he says sensor their media etc. or threaten them he’s still not dialled back on Greenland. Does that emboldened Putin to do whatever he wants knowing Trump may back him? China doing what they want because Trump is a pussy? Sone may say this is all a bit far fetched but who’s going to stop him?

After city have just won a champions league game nearly every topic is about shitty politics
Left wing
Right wing
Upper class
Lower class
Black, white
Who gives a fuck,it's a football forum where strangers speak with like minded blues.

I remember years ago someone on the football forum alluding darkly to what went on down here in the politics subforum. He made it sound like a place you didn't want to enter as if you did you'd be forever lost. Obviously the warning was attractive and so I dipped my toe in.

And I'm glad I did as it has been interesting reading and writing on the big issues of the day. Brexit, Palestine and Trump just to name three. The majority of posters are respectful, articulate and interesting.

Compared to the comments sections of the daily newspapers this place is filled to the brim with Hitchens, Chomskys, Voltaires and Twains.

However he was right about the Hotel California like qualities of the place.
 
I think of Badenoch as a female Amorim - stubborn with a formation/cabinet that isn't working and can't see that its down to her teams lack of talent so pushes on.

I tune out periodically and binned social media aside from YouTube and Bluesky - the latter I use for a specific non-political purpose. Most political engagement is on here and I enjoy it on the whole

After the derby win and knowing Trump was despoiling our fair land, I tuned out this week until Trump fucked off. No sense in ruining my good mood.

Outside of that I don’t obsess about politics. I don’t watch political programs, TV news or read newspapers - aside from Guardian Sports when we win.

You do realise if it was just about City it would be quite boring, that’s why there are sub sections you don’t have too look at them.
 
Am far too heavily invested in politics and it almost feels like an act of self-harm to spend so much of my retirement reading books on economics, Islam and the ‘culture wars’ in order to counter far-right narratives on X. Probably futile too, as Reform will probably still win in 2029 if WW3 doesn’t start before then.

And so instead of working my way through the unread collection of books I’ve acquired on Eastern and Western philosophy, I’m ordering titles like this:
