How many horses are truly in this race?

Too early to call. Neither us nor the rags have played with any real consistency even though we've both continued to pick up results. Chelsea's new players started well but have faded. I expect them to sign a proven goal scorer in January - if they are still in touch then, then it could give them the boost they need to make a proper challenge.

Of the rest of the teams ... we'll see. Right now it's hard to see any of Arsenal, Spurs, or anyone else getting close. However expect those two to spend money in January.

I don't see it becoming a two horse race the way it did last season.

Us and them, no question.

Chelsea have an amazing midfield. And er, nothing else. Strikeforce, limp. Defence, limp. GK, limp wimp.

And in doing so, fail FFP and get kicked out of the very competition everyone is saying we need to start doing better in.

No thanks. We've got the foundations of a very good team now. Slow and steady over constant money splurges now, please.
Shows a complete misunderstanding of the way fees are shown in the accounts mate as fees are amortised.

Say we buy him at £50m on a 5 year contract, that shows as £10m per year in the accounts.

We sell Dzeko for £20m, which would actually mean the two transfers show as a net £10m profit in next years accounts.

Actually you are wrong here, the Dzeko transfer wouldn't show as a £20m profit in the accounts next year if we sell him for £20m

The accounts will show the profit/loss of an asset on disposal, so you have to take off the assets book value ie

Dzeko bought for £27m on a 5 year contract = £5.4m amortisation per annum

assuming he is sold in January his book value would be £16.2m (£27m les the 2 years with us @ £5.4m per annum = £16.2m)

So we would have an asset on our books worth £16.2m , if sold for £20m , we would show a £3.8m profit in the accounts...NOT £20m

I don't see an injury to RVP being in any way pivotal to their chances. It's just how they work. Rooney is barely scoring at the moment, but you just watch him start as soon as RVP is on the doctors table.

Chelsea I'm still really unsure of. Already had a bad little run and third despite starting the season much much better than us. Doesn't really tell you all you need to know though, farcical game against the shite, and their attack will overwhelm most teams in the league. Long term injury to Terry could be a problem possibly.

I've always maintained the Rags are our main competitors for the title and still think that. A lot seems to hinge on this possibility of Chelsea getting Falcao in January, which if they weren't in the race before that certainly would be after it.

CFC don't have the strength in depth up front. I was waiting for them to buy another striker in the Summer, and they didn't. If they buy a top quality striker in Janaury then they are a big threat. I doubt very much if Falcao will go anywhere in January. Have you seen the Spanish League Table?

I thought he had a get out clause in his contract? His dad was talking about this the other week.
He extended his contract in July 2011 and he has a get out clause of 45 Million Euros.

But presumably the player will be happy to stay whilst they are fighting for the Spanish League title, and they wouldn't want to sell him. I am only guessing.

Get out clause is 60M, he is bought from Porto for 45M€.
