The proper record is Dixie Dean's and always will be. 65 goals, and he only played 42 games.
The problem with Dixie Deans' record is that he played in an era that averaged 4 goals a game, compared to the 2.7 the modern game does. Goalkeepers didn't even have gloves, defensive tactics were non existent and the offside rule...
Not to mention the 42 league game season. This is why the top 8 goal tallies are from the late 20s/early 30s era. It rained goals.
If you look at the top scorer by % of the goals scored in the league that season, Dean's 60 is the equivalent to scoring 36 today. That's how much goalscoring has tightened up and how few goals we have these days.
For Haaland to actually score 40, 50+ in a league season would be substantially more impactful than Dean's 60 back in the 1928.
