How to dress for a job interview?

Suit and tie. Then as soon as you get into the interview room, unbutton your suit, take your tie off, take your shoes off, stick your feet up and say "right, lets do this"

this might work for you if you really want the job

Dress professionally: clean, pressed clothes, shoes polished, nails clean. no perfume, no distracting jewelry. research, research, research! know the names of senior leadership, history and purpose of business, a little about their industry. bring prepared questions with you - some examples: what are the top five priorities for the position? new position or replacement? if replacement, why did the other person leave? management style of manager? typical day for the position? growth path? stay away from questions in the first interview about vacation, sick policy, flex hours - leave that for the last interview. practice answers to typical questions: greatest strengths, weaknesses? why are you looking to change jobs? thank them for their time, ASK for the job, and follow up with a personal thank you letter that summarizes your qualifications, responds to any areas of concern highlighted in the interview, detail how you can add value, and ask for the job again. works for me every time!

alternatively just flash them

Is this a joke? So what if other people are seen around without ties. They already have jobs. For an interview it has to be smart, as if you were going to your grandmother's sister's wedding. Full suit, windsor knotted tie and shiny shoes.

Personally like wearing a tie. The suit jacket I dislike.

Feels like a weakling 2 year old is trying to strangle you :)

As for looking 'smart' - Smart is utterly subjective.. a meaningless construct etc. But if being comfortable is the deal, and if you feel comfortabler wearing certain stuff then I guess it matters (in no real way at all) :)
