How underrated was De Jong?

Oh when DeJong, goes sliding in, oh when DeJong goes sliding in ………..

I think he's one of the most overrated players to have ever played for us! A "get stuck in" player that fans love, but way too eager to go to ground to recover from bad positional play.

I still don't think Gareth Barry gets the respect he deserves from that era. A proto Rodri that Pep would have loved and if he'd been born Spanish, come through their coaching in the 90s, and played in that great Spanish team might have been an all time great.

He was overrated.

We relentlessly took the piss out of Scott Parker for being a ‘mud-on-yer-shorts’ kind of player sliding about the place.
He gave his all and was good. We moved on quickly from him and never looked back.

Some of our supporters complain about his dirty reputation. He broke 3 players legs and is most known for nearly breaking Alonso’s ribs in a World Cup final. I’d say, along with his propensity to go to ground, it’s about accurate that reputation.

You make a really interesting point here... I always thought David Silva could be a really dirty menace on the pitch, but because of his elegance and magic he often got away with it. But if you look closely at some of the things he did, he was a bit of a dirty player at times haha
I do indeed know. He was cute and clever how he got away with it!

I liked De Jong but always felt he was more of a ‘cult’ player and was overrated and idolised a bit above his abilities compared to other players.

Gareth Barry was the opposite but was an incredible player for us. Every big game it was a 8/10 performance.

Overrated by fond memories, I feel

Good positive attitude but limited ability. Fernandinho was a huge upgrade. De Jong was aggressive and got stuck in, which fans love (especially in england) , but ultimately he was suitable for a side on the up, not at the top.

I've been saying this over and over in the match day and transfer threads, lol

This squad, in particuclar, is screaming out for a Nigel-type character

Recall him spending a lot of time on the bench towards the end of the league winning season, but I might have got that wrong

Very limited player, but someone we needed in the squad at the time, and clearly a fan favourite

Not sure he warrants an 'underrated' thread

Ability wise he's a touch overrated and he'd have no chance of playing in a Pep team. However, a player or two with his aggressive nature are always welcome in games such as the derby and we could do with a bit of De Jong spirit for next Sunday.

Remember his goal at Anfield too?

A good player for us at the time.
