HS2 - Birmingham to Manchester scrapped.

I don't really understand how they can "cancel" it, as large chunks of the country north of Birmingham have already been dug up, for instance around Lichfield where work has been ongoing since before covid next to the A38, what are they going to do, spend huge sums of money filling it all back in, and return the countryside to what it was ?

That section is between Birminghamd and Crewe already, and they've built new bridges over, and are nearly finished moving a motorway junction on the M42, east of Birmingham.

Happens all the time in banana republics, of which the UK is now one (banana monarchy?). Big projects announced, loads of money spent on them, then they run out of funding. The amount of half-finished shit in developing countries is unreal.

Why did they start it down sarf.
Absolutely everyone involved in the scheme seems to have said that it wasn't worth starting without the Northern bits.

Knowing it would start in the South, this was supposedly hammered home - If you start there, you CAN'T cancel the rest as most of the payback is due to the Northern sections. If you're considering cancelling them, don't start the fucking thing in the first place.

So, what do they do?

Interesting to see the Tories annual conference is in Manchester next week. Can't wait to hear Hunt/Sunak trying to justify cancelling the Brum to Manchester section.
