I was a Sony Ericcson man until I was waiting for over 12 months for the release of the original Experia which was continuously delayed because Sony couldn't get it to work.
I read somwhere that Sony had dropped the Symbian OS and struck a deal with HTC for them to manufacture the Experia & switch the Symbian OS to Windows Mobile 6. Apparently the Experia was just a re-badged HTC Touch Pro so after looking at one of those in the shop I went with HTC.
The phone was fuckin complicated & I'm very technically minded and the manual that came on a CD ROM was 470 pages long!!!! Anyway, I stuck with it & eventually upgraded to the Touch Pro 2 which was absolutely superb and by far the best phone on the market as a business tool!!!
Last Tuseday my upgrade was due so I narrowed my choices down to the HTC Desire Z or the HTC Pro 7 and I went with the Pro 7 which is the spiritual upgrade for the Touch Pro 2. The phone itself is absolutely ace, but Windows Mobile 7 is basically a windows version of the Apple iOS!!!
Microsoft have made a major mistake with WM7 by going down the Apple/Android route!!! All WM7 phones OS's are exactly the same apart from the limited manufacturers software customisation Hubs and the hardware of the handsets themselves.
Microsoft have turned a powerful mobile business tool into a social networking device!!! I can no longer use the brilliant Activesync to synchronise my phone's office suite with my PC's Office suite directly! To back up my phone or to get all my Outlook contacts & calendar entries onto my HTC Pro 7, I now have to have a Hotmail account and upload all my Outlook contacts, Tasks & Calendar enties to it, then link my phone to my Hotmail account which then unsecurely sychronises the uploaded details over-the-air to my HTC Pro 7 phone!!
Considering the major security breach that took out the global Sony Playstation network recently, I feel extremely uncomfortable having all my private contacts and my crucial work diary details in the 'cloud' online! What seriously pissed me off is that I was continuously prompted by Hotmail to link my Facebook & Twitter accounts with Hotmail which would have imported all my contacts there into Hotmail.
It was only on further investigation that I realised that the default setting for Hotmail is that anyone who is a contact in Twitter, Facebook or MSN could see ALL my private Outlook contacts and ALL my private diary entries!!!! This was UNTIL I found a small tab which was hidden away under advanced options which allowed me to block ANYONE but ME to see all my personal contacts and diary entries!!! Why would anyone want to share these details with all & sundry?
The ability to back up my private details between Microsoft Outlook & my phone's office suite is what separated my Windows Mobile Phone from all the social networking led iPhone's, Android & Blackberry phones. I have a few MP3's, pictures and videos on my SD card and I was shocked to find out that now I can only access my phones media by using the Zune programme which is like a cut down version of iTunes. Also no Windows phones have the ability to insert an external card!
And to top it off, when I connected my Touch Pro 2 to my PC, my computer saw the device as a external Hard Drive which meant I could drag & drop files from my PC onto my phone & vice versa cutting out the need to carry a USB stick around with me, Windows Mobile 7 has blocked this very basic but crucial function.
If social networking is your thing, then the Desire S/Z are right up there and you wont be disappointed by its speed or functionality as it has been classed in the top 3 phones currently available. But for me if I wanted a social networking, App inspired phone I would have bought an iPhone long ago!! When I got my Windows Mobile 7 OS HTC Pro 7, I thought I was getting an upgrade to my Touch Pro 2 and a mobile extention of my office PC, basically what I've got is a more powerful Microsoft iPhone!!!!
I'm seriously pissed off!!!!!
