Hugely Encouraging

I'm logging on for a few minutes so apologies for any repetition, I haven't read the rest of the board.

I'm hugely encouraged by today's performance. First of all, well played Mark Hughes for dropping Tevez and going 4-3-3/4-5-1. I felt we contained them completely in the first half. It was almost like we had a game plan that they were going to batter us, but they didn't really. If we had hit Ireland a bit more when we broke up their attacks I thought we could have gone in ahead at half time.

Second half I thought we dominated the game. We were already on top when they scored. I'll tell you what...Adebayor cannot mark. He's done that 3 or 4 times this season, let his man get away from him. He did it in the first half and we got away with it.

Then we took the game by the scruff of the neck and dominated. Ireland bossed the midfield, De Jong won everything. Lescott again, looked fantastic. Then, on 60 minutes, the substitution.

I've got to be honest, I thought Hughes was making a big mistake. Barry was awful again, fine, but the sustitution made us go 4-4-2 when Ireland was finding loads of room in "the hole". I was angry. I thought Hughes had fucked up.

But he hadn't. We carried on dominating. Tevez found space in that "hole" and was outstanding. Any Bluemoon regular will know that I have been vociferous in my critisism of Tevez but, my goodness, he was excellent.

And we deservedly went 2-1 up. The game was over, we looked like getting more.

Their equaliser was bad luck. Bagatelle. Yes, we should have cleared our lines but for Liverppol to get a richochet goal like that was damn lucky, especially after they had created virtually nothing all game.

I'm hugely encouraged by that performance. I think we were the better side by some distance and should have won the game. But we now go into a crucial period in our season and, I'll tell you what, I feel confident of some big results.

For large spells of today's game we played our best football of the season. I feel really positive all of a sudden, just when it matters. Well played City. It should have been 3 points of course, but overall it's a big step in the right direction.

fucking spot on post.sense at last.

I was hoping to see this...just for the last 10 minutes....athough you have to give credit to SWP for his assist. Before this though I didnt think he'd had a good game

The only bit I'd disagree with was the first half tactics. I thought he got it wrong, but I can't complain too much as it had the desired effect, i.e. to stifle. I just thought we could have sprung into a 4 3 3 a bit quicker when we had the ball and kept it on the deck rather than getting the ball quickly to Ade who was on his own with no support. Basically, we were playing a 4 5 1 even when we had the ball. Too negative for me. But it was 0 - 0 at half time and that was the game plan.

The substitution was excellent. I must admit, before yesterday I had no idea what Tevez was about. I remember seeing him about 5 years ago for Argentina and he was full of tricks and was strong as an ox, since then I've just seen a workhorse most of the times I've seen him. Well now I know what he's about! He was brilliant yesterday. He caused the centre halfs all sorts of problems; coming short to get the ball, holding the ball up and playing some lovely little passes. Forget 'impact sub' if we can play a formation which allows him to do this then he has to start. In fact, the midfield and attack that finished the game should start against Hull. Barry simply isn't worth his place in the side anymore.

Is there any reason why we can't play like that for 90 minutes though? This was a Liverpool side with two holding midfielders without Torres. There was no reason to expect that they were going to go for the jugular from the first minute. The first half tactics had the desired effect, but were they the correct tactics in the first place? It's debatable.

Well said and spot on Didsy.

I feel hopeful we are about to come out of a poor run of form....and don't forget during that poor run we haven't even been beaten.

I think we've showed all year we are a VERY tough to team to beat. Every time we've gone behind the team has dug deep and responded to at least avoid defeat.

One step forwards and then... whats going to happen next.

First half was dire to be fair, we were far to deep, allowing Liverpool to much time on the ball, and there were far too many long balls to Ade who is never, ever, going to win one. Annoyingly when we did get it on the deck and bring Ireland into the game we looked the better footballing side, but as was said afterwards, it was a dog dinner of a first half.

Bringing Tevez on changed the game, i stated pre-game that he should of started in a 451. Ive also said that in a 442 De Jong and Ireland are the more natural combination, so credit to Hughes for getting things right today (he was due to get one right). We pushed higher up the pitch, got it down and dominated them for a long period.

Then at 2-2 we reverted to type, dropped very very deep, stopped pressuring on the ball around our own area and the game was back to how it was in the first half.

Now, 3 times in 4 games we have lost a lead, thats an issue. Defending from set-pieces (again) is a big issue, not clearing our lines (again) is a bigger issue. Credit to Hughes for team selection and subs today BUT, one decent performance in five games doesnt make things all rosey again. We need this level of performance as a base and then we can eliminate the errors and look forwards. If however we get another run of dire performances then its just another false dawn from MH.

I have been worried for weeks, we have been playing so poorly, but yesterday I saw a MUCH better performance(the best since the rags)AND Hughes(who I don't really care for as out manager)reacted making a bold move turning the game!

sorry to gatecrash the backslapping party,

i wasnt happy about yesterdays performance. we sat back and let them dictate the game. bearing in mind, this was the worst liverpool side i`ve seen in many a long day imo. it was further decimated within the first 15 minutes. it came after piss poor home performance against the might of burnley who away from turf moor have been everybodies whipping boys. before that a scrapped draw at birmingham, the draw at home to fulham, draw at wigan where we looked seconded best throughout the game. 1-1 draw with villa which was probably our best result. the win against west ham thank god.

so forgive me for wanting the best for our club, but as good as only losing 1 in 16 sounds

more to the point winning 1 in 8 will not get us to where we want or should be, come may.

with arsenal in the cup, chelsea in the league to come, before that we have the might of hull, i`ll be keeping my finger crossed because i certainly wont be suffering from over confidence

i know we all want the best for our club and we will have differing opinions on how this aim should be achieved.

we need to kick us on and we need to start against hull. i fear anything less than a convincing win against hull and our season will evapourated before our eyes.
