I hate our 4-2-3-1 tactics.

4-2-3-1 is our perfect formation with the players we have.

We just don't move the ball about quick enough, and recently we've gone to italian football and playing the game at walking pace.

Are you taking into account injuries?

Mancini is the most tactically astute manager I have seen in the Premiership. Mourinho was good too

i agree, for fucks sake support our manager and our players, getting really sick of our moaning fickle ungrateful fans

we need more width to our play it is so predictable that we are going to try to open up a defense through the middle , every team we play knows this , our stat on crosses confirms this with only an average of 5 per game .we have some tall players and should use these to their strengths.

Shall we try 3-5-2 then?

No. We should play 8-8-8. This will give us a numerical advantage, which will surely do the trick. Bobby should be sacked for not thinking of this.

I recovered this fascinating article written (link above) a few years ago in the Gaurdian. It basically deals in depth why 3-5-2 went out of fashion, having been originally created to get essentially the best out of Maradona prior and leading up to the to the 1986 World Cup.

Take some time to read it if you can.

It is interesting how Napoli at the time the article was written, were according to the journalist the only team in "modern times" the only team still using it to reasonable effect. I am sure as an Italian, Mancini would have remembered how effective they were.

Mancini whether we like it or not, clearly distrusts wingers, in fact it could be argued that unless we had a player(s) of the calibre of Ronaldo, Bale or an interested Robinho for example, that Mancini has the right to dabble with this particular formation.

Certainly the token purchase of Sinclair, and the sale of Johnson seems to confirm this point.

The problem is we are getting little chance to put the formation in to practice, but still Mancini appears to be on a mission from God, long term to make it work.

This to my mind is the reason we purchased Maicon. As a Brazilian, he in theory would be
the perfect right wing back (old or experienced take your pick) to put a form of
3-5-2(1-1) into practice. Unfortunately, some of the players we have don't have the mental intelligence or the will to follow through with this Game Plan.

Let's not forget the unfortunate and unhelpful comments attributed to Richards earlier in the season. Sadly Richards would have been the one player who in my opinion who would have benefitted from this formation as the right back right centre back.Presumably Kompany would play in the middle, with Nastasic as the Left Back Centre Back.

Mancini I remember, was less than impressed by Micah's "confused" comments. Hence lack of time and lack of patience, whilst we chase the Premiership again.

Certainly with the current players we have looked laboured this season, with the formation that won the title, and came up well short in the Champs League and Europa in the last two campaigns.

Certainly there was a comeback of sorts with Barca last season, but they of course have Messi to play the Maradona role, plus the players to implement the game plan and the fluidity to change position at will also.

With the CURRENT players at Mancini's disposal, his "Fantasy" team would possibly look like the team below. Unfortunately the demands of winning the Premiership, and unhelpful contributions from the press AND SOME OF OUR PLAYERS, make that possibility look unlikely. Hence we will continue to roll over most of the teams in the Premiership easily with the current formation, until Mancini can bring in the players with the desire to make his plan A work.

Despite last Saturdays result, we are in a two horse race with United to win the League, and don't be surprised to see him try to practice to win the FA Cup with a 3-5-2 of sorts.

Mancini as we know is extremely tactically astute and also fucking stubborn, we have been found out and probably we are in more of a period of transition than any of or rivals.

Despite United leading the Table they are doing it from memory. Chelsea and Arsenal are spent, so the 3-5-2 will be persevered in the games against weaker opposition to bed it in.

With current players, possibly what Mancini would have in mind.
