Pulis, and Stoke, have found a way of competing in the Premiership. They haven't got any funds to speak of so can't really afford top quality players and, due to this, they can't really play open expansive football. So, to compete, they've bought physical battling players, who are much cheaper to buy and plentiful in World Football, narrowed their pitch to prevent the opposition playing football, and use set pieces and long balls alligned with workrate and robust challenges to win games. It's no coincidence that Stoke's results away from The Britannia are so much worse than at home, they won 2 away games last season, and 1 so far this which, when compared with the 10 home games they won last season and 6 so far this, speaks volumes.
Would I want to watch Stoke each week and witness the long ball game, and those Delap throw ins? Of course not, wins or not, it's tedious stuff. As an opposition fan watching his team have to deal with it it's extremely frustrating, it's not entertaining, it's not attractive to watch and, ultimately, it's not football as many believe it should be played. When Delap isn't on the pitch they still play the same way, however they are far less dangerous as they have to actually get relatively near the goal to create chances. When all you've got to do is get a throw-in within 45 yards of the box and it's a goalscoring opportunity (especially on Stoke's minute pitch) it makes it far easier to keep the opposition pegged back and under pressure.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of Stoke or Pulis, I find the team/manager objectionable, and their fans collectively backward, but they do what they have to to exist in the Premiership. Personally I'd rather have your Burnleys, Fulhams and Hulls in the Premiership, who actually try and play football, than Stoke, who seem to have forgotten football is a sport where entertainment is supposed to be part of the appeal.
