One thing I fail to understand is why Americans go to to Halloween parties dressed in non horror themed costumes. They go dressed as quarterbacks or cowboys, instead of ghosts, vampires, skeletons, etc.

Religious zealots.
They wouldn't let their kids dress up as the devil or something evil and dark.
