Basically I class myself as an educated fella but I think I have fallen for a scam. I received a phone call from a finance company called Horizon (0161 246 0200) on tuesday asking me about an unsecured loan, allegedly they had got my details from a opinion survey I completed on the net. They said I fell into all the criteria for a loan of upto £5000.00. I said I could do with about 3600.00 for a new motor. They asked me a few personal details but at no time was I asked or would I had given my bank account details. Anyway they said everything seemed fine and that I had to ring 09064001849 which they told me was a premium rate number to confirm the loan. I stupidly rang this number and was told by orange before the call connected it would be £1.70 per minute, I proceeded. A male answered the phone and I gave him the reference number. He started to ask me all the same questions again so I asked him to ring me back, he also stated that the cost of the call would be repaid back to me if I sent a copy of my orange phone bill showing the amount of the call, once again I stupidly carried on. The address he gave me at the end of the call to obtain my call refund was CFD freepost.

I do not even think now in hindsight that this is a kosher address as I thought any freepost address has to have a number or a code for the postal authourities. Anyway this all happened on tuesday and an hour after this call I received a text saying Chris we have your loan decision. You need to call the number (premium rate one) or check your e-mail. I didnt want to get my fingers burnt twice as from the last call I worked it out it would of cost in the region of £25.00 for the 13 minutes I was on the phone. So I decided to await the e-mail, guess what 48 hours later still no e-mail. So today I have been ringing the 0161 number and just get a pre recorded message.

Sorry about this being a bit long winded but any advice?

Sounds very dodgy.

I'm glad it was only 25 quid though. At first I thought you'd somehow got swindled out of 3,600!!

Ignore them and put it down to experience.

OR you could contact a mate of mine who has a large amount of cash thats been frozen by a local Authority, he needs a few quid for the legal fees to release the money and he will pay you half once complete.....but when you speak to him you have to listen carefully because his English isnt great, he's Nigerian I think.

I quite often get these type of calls offering all sorts. They all though seem to start with “we are contacting you in response to a survey you completed”. I must have completed loads of surveys!

I always tell them I don’t recall the survey and perhaps they would be kind and remind me when and where it was and what it was about so I can be sure the call is genuine. When they say they don’t have that information I ask if they are aware of the data protection act and that they should maintain records to demonstrate how they have obtained personal details (not sure is this is in fact a requirement). If you keep asking them the questions they soon get bored and hang up.
