'I was there' is correct English. At the risk of sounding like a boring English teacher, we should always use the past simple with a definite past time, i.e., 'was'. The present perfect (I have been) is used without a definite time.
And yes, it pissed me off when I saw it. Fair play to the guy for making my job a little harder!
