He's right - he only has himself to blame for his problems and I think for our sakes he left us at the right time what with his injuries and jail time. Fair play to him for not wanting the sympathy vote, but he has to perform on the pitch now.
It's a shame, because he played well for us and was one of our best players for a long time. At the time I looked at him, Gareth Barry, Scott Parker, Micheal Carrick, Jermain Jenas ect and they were all around the same level, pushing for a place in the England squad. Obviously none of them were starters in centre midfield like Lampard, Gerrard and Hargreaves, but that group of players were the next in line and there wasn't really much to choose between them.
The past 3 years or so have set him back and obviously he's now well behind those guys in the pecking order, but if he could have kept his head down, stayed fit and out of trouble, and progressed as a footballer, he could have been playing at a much higher level like Barry or Carrick but unfortunately his reputation is that that he's got a hell of a lot to do to redeem himself, and in some peoples eyes he never will...
