I was watching Gary Lineker's podcast the other day and they were trying to guess the top 10 assisters in PL history. They were absolutely shocked that David Beckham wasn't in the top 10 and Paul Scholes wasn't even in the top 20 (it turns out he just scrapes into the top 40). It didn't occur to them at any moment that these rags might just have been massively overrated.

They were absolutely shocked that David Beckham wasn't in the top 10 and Paul Scholes wasn't even in the top 20 (it turns out he just scrapes into the top 40). Yes Beckham could cross and run around a lot (a lot like Diego Armando Rice) and Scholes could pass a ball 30 yards and that stood out in the late 90s and early 00s but did it not occur to anyone why United never won more champions leagues, it’s because GPC wasn’t a great tactician and these good premier league players lacked the technical ability that the European teams and players evolved into during those eras - can name at least 8 city players off the bat better than both

Yeah my algorithm was showing me a few highlights from old CL games from around that time, and one of them was the rags victory over Juventus on the semi-final in 1999, and honestly, the technical ability on display was pretty average, with the exception of Zidane. Their CL win was like Greece's Euros victory. Every round was basically the technically inferior team trying their luck and it coming off. Kinda like when Liverpool won it in 2005, or Chelsea under Di Matteo. You can't say the same thing about the second time they won it, but that treble winning team was not technically brilliant.
