ID cards.

For now. Once the system is in place it’ll be “papers please” at some time in the future

I’m not sure about that but I can never prove something that hasn’t happened will happen

Does it happen in Europe? I was once asked for ID in Portugal, obviously didn’t have it and was detained. Yes, my behaviour was attracting the attention of the police, I wasn’t just stopped in the street

But if I did have a European ID card or had a UK one on my phone. I would have been on my way pretty quickly

No. From what I understand it’s simply to provide of you are entitled to health care(which raises its own issues because nurses aren’t trained border staff) and will also be used where you would otherwise be required to provide ID

Say, renting and they want your driving licence but you don’t drive. You can simply provide this

That’s what I understand but I still find it all unnecessary
Not sure that’s right. Digital id is to prove you are eligible to work in uk

Ok. That makes it seems even less worthwhile then
If someone is now working cash in hand, they shouldn’t be doing that and the ‘employer’ already knows that - what does the ID card solve that a passport and/or national insurance number doesn’t?

I don’t really have a position on the ID Card. But it seems bonkers for a struggling government, who didn’t put this in their manifesto to chose this particular hill to die on, on the strength of some potential ‘illegal immigrants’ that may or may not be working?

They could solve it the other way by giving asylum seekers temporary ID cards then allow them to work in certain occupations whilst thier case is being heard. This potentially stops them being exploited and/resorting to crime

There was no need to put it in their manifesto as they are using this as a solution/ part solution to addressing something that was

That seems a bit loose to me. ID cards are a difficult sell and in my view need a longer run up. And certainly need more justification that a few people are working that shouldn’t be

Today we have been told it will be to prove your right work only and nothing else.
Not health care, renting, or anything else.

As I said above then. That’s even less of a justification - we all have NI numbers, visas or passport etc

If you don’t have that now and are still working then your employer already knows so is taking the chance. Why would an ID card change that?

Again, like I said. I don’t really have a position either way, it just seems a strange thing for an unpopular government to attempt to being in

Keep going, pal, but do understand that these aren’t long term City fans, they are political uncertainties who have chosen the worse of their parties.

If that was the case surely it would be a voluntary/optional thing.

Matter of time before people that look a bit foreign are stopped on the street if reform get in imo.

People are not routinely asked to show ID to police in the EU, or for that matter Russia. Unless you are breaking into a car or something.

Who’s heard of the Fabian Society and it’s members all Labour and ex labour leaders, look it up.
