The Godfather. I know it's not an original answer, but I remember watching it for the first time when I was a teenager and immediately knowing it was a special film.
The Offer TV series is worth a watch for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but is a fan. It tells the story of the making of the film and all the challenges they faced to get it made. They don't attempt to recreate any scenes from the film, which is just as well, but cleverly show what was happening off camera between takes.
