Why is everyone calling Hancock a c**t but Boy George who was jailed for kidnapping an escort, chaining and beating him up is alright. And Moyles who offered to take Charlotte Church's virginity live on air is seen as a paragon of virtue?
The thing is, Chris Moyles' on-air faux-pas was clearly a big error of judgement, but he was told off, he apologised, moved on, and clearly grew up a bit. I can't remember the last time anyone talked about him, let alone complained about his behaviour on the radio. Everyone deserves a chance to make amends after something like that, and if Johnathan Ross can come back from the voicemail scandal then Moyles should be able to repair his career as well.
The same goes for Ant. He had issues he wasn't taking enough responsibility for. He made a huge mistake that nearly cost lives that weren't just his own, but he was banned from driving and fined £86,000. That was his actual sentence. The more figurative sentence he got was to organise his shit and, by all accounts, it appears he did that. He spent some time with his tail between his legs; he served his punishment as it was handed down to him. We could debate whether he "deserved" to return to a high profile entertainment position but, legally, there was nothing left to do.
As for Boy George, he committed an awful crime against that poor lad but, again, he served his time. Like with Ant, we can debate the length and severity of his punishment, but he was released after four months of a 15-month sentence and wore an ankle bracelet for the next 11 months. Long-term drug use was presented as a mitigating factor in the case and it appears it's a part of his life that he's been able to move on from. He tried to apply for Celebrity Big Brother in 2009 but was turned down, so it's not like he could just force his way onto I'm A Celeb this time.
Now we get to Matt Hancock. He lied about the numbers of COVID-19 tests that had been developed on numerous occasions, he handed out PPE contracts worth millions to personal friends (the High Court found that he had acted unlawfully by doing this) and he awarded massive NHS contracts to a family company he had shares in. It was bad enough that he was lining the pockets of his friends and family with taxpayer cash, but the biggest mistake of all was the decision to release untested hospital patients into care homes during the early weeks of the pandemic. I don't think we'll ever know just how many deaths that decision caused. And then he willingly breached rules that he forced the rest of the country to live under for 18 months.
If Hancock had gone to prison for any of this, or if he'd been tried in any court except that of the public's opinion, then we'd be having a different conversation. Instead he's being paid another £400k, on top of god knows how ever much he stole from the UK taxpayer, to craft a narrative that the only thing he did wrong during the pandemic was to have that affair with Gina Coladangelo, and that he only needs to be "redeemed" and "forgiven" for following his dick. It's all well and good pointing the finger at Chris Moyles, Boy George, Ant, etc. but they opened up about their crimes/errors, paid for them in one way or another, and then carried on.
Nothing of consequence has happened to Matt Hancock, nor will it.
