Nothing can stop Otamendi squaring himself up and diving in, missing the ball and exposing the keeper to a 1 on 1 time and time again. He’s not going to stop now.

True but he’s too slow to shepherd a fast striker down a less dangerous alley. The Wolves strikers could have just pushed and run the ball past Otamendi.

There is too much space between our defenders and keeper give we lack pace and aren’t putting enough pressure on opposition passers.

Adama Traore would beat any central defender in a sprint.

There's two aspects to this argument: the attacking and midfield play that minimises the number of attacks from the opponent, and the quality of the central defenders. I think Otamendi is past his best, and he's our 3rd choice central defender. I would look to play the young central defenders where possible, but the biggest reason for the Wolves defeat was not how Ota coped one on one with Traore, but the fact that our central defenders were repeatedly left one on one with their forwards.

I agree with you Marvin. Ota has been a good servant but he’s passed his best. He can still do a decent job if we retain the ball better, pressure the opposition passer when they do get the ball and reduce the space for our opponents to run into behind our defence.

My preference would be to give a younger central defender a start and have Rodri and Fern in cereal midfield. They would require Pep to change his ethos a bit that is unlikely. I’m hoping Stones will be for after the international break.

Another big issue that hasn’t been addressed is how poor we are at challenging for the ball in the air that is most evident when we are “attacking” corners and defending near lost set pieces. Yes we through too many crosses into the box on Sunday but we could underachieve if we don’t have an aerial threat in the squad.

In Peps 2nd season he had stopped it. That season he was quality, imo our best centre half.

I don't think Pep rates him. And I think Nico is well aware of that.

Had it not been for some ridiculous fees for the CBs we were after, he would have gone in the summer.

Personally I remember what he is capable of and do wonder why he has moved away from that. It's like he hasn't retained the coaching.

Conversely, if Pep really doesn't rate him then I don't see any pain in putting Garcia in.

Garcia is a young lad still learning his trade and maybe the fans would forgive him some mistakes but imagine what it could do for him if he cost City points Its only fair that eh should be properly managed

He needs to learn to make a foul. If I were to go to ground like that, I'd be fucking certain to take my man out. Take a booking and concede the free kick. When he dives in like he does he is very focused on the ball.

Take the man first, if you get the ball as well then happy days.

I agree he needs managing. And that is happening currently.

For as bad as Ota has been, I can only assume Pep thinks that he is still a safer bet than Garcia

I agree mate but the 2nd goal was in the last minute so it was neither here nor there really with Wolves already 1 nil up

Lol so you are saying Ota needs to learn to foul?
Seriously.

He wouldn't last 30 minutes on the pitch, we'd be down to 10 men every game he played.

So while our possession play in our half left us suspect in our back half for the counter attack our defenders in particular our CD 's didn't cope that well you say when left one on one.

They scored twice with Traore quick enough to break and only once were we mugged one on one , in fact 5 breaks for the game Wolves managed when in four of them they could have scored and scored twice.

We lost this game because we were too slow in our build up play and meant needless balls into the box lost count of how many were picked off.

its a game of inches if Silva had of scored the tempo of the game would have changed.

Don't get me wrong it was a poor performance by our lofty standards but 74 per cent possession wins you 9 times out of ten games in the premiership.

Two shots on target for the whole game is well below our average.

The reason why I think it will amazing if we get to 90 points this year are three fold.

1/. VK gone and no spiritual leader on and off the pitch anymore ( Mendy our most effervescent character and we get him on the pitch for 2 games on the spin since he joined 2 and a bit season ago ).

2/. Our stalwarts are being asked to do more which they can't because their legs are too ageing , Silva , Ferny and Kun I think are in their final year with us.

3/. The team as a whole is not as deep as it was and too many other sides like Wolves and there will be others probably starting with Palace are now capable of getting points against us home and away.

Mark my words if Wolves didn't have Europa I would back them in against the sides to finish top 6 of last season to get something at least home or away and finish top 6.

Leicester will do likewise and I really like the look of Burnley this year now they don't have Europa.

We had 74% possession but gave the ball away repeatedly. More than in any game this season apparently. I don't think Wolves have progressed at all from the side we saw last season. It's relatively easy to lie deep, and counter-attack. Loads of teams do it. Wolves will have problems when teams do that to them.

You're right that some players are approaching the end of their careers e.g., Fern, David Silva and Aguero but that need not be a problem. I think Rodrigo is going to be an effective player for us, and Bernardo, KDB, Foden can all provide the creativity that David Silva provides.

I don't think there's much wrong with the squad. Pep just made a mess of it for once.

I agree with you're principal.

The only reason I didn't raise it myself is because I believe that Nico is good enough.

In one on one situations he needs to be better. With regular playtime 2 seasons ago he had eradicated this from his game. It's come back, and that is down to becoming a bit part player.

At the end of the end of the day, he was left in far to many one v one situations on Sunday and that is primarily what needs addressing.

I think we're reaching the point with Otamendi that means he's virtually unusable. He was fantastic in the 2017/2018 season but it's appearing that was a player performing far beyond his regular standards. I do agree that it's worrying how often he's left one vs one but it's going to happen and he's totally untrustworthy in those situations.

And when he gets a red card for it, would you still be saying that was the right thing to do? As others have said, he is not the quickest and 1v1 most PL attackers could breeze past him, so he has to make those last gasp tackles - some he gets, some he doesn't

If it prevented a goal, yes.

All day
