Tank Park Salute - Billy Bragg

Kiss me goodnight and say my prayers
Leave the light on at the top of the stairs
Tell me the names of the stars up in the sky
A tree taps on the window pane
That feeling smothers me again
Daddy is it true that we all have to die

At the top of the stairs
Is darkness

I closed my eyes and when I looked
Your name was in the memorial book
and what had become of all the things we planned
I accepted the commiserations
Of all your friends and your relations
But there's some things I still don't understand

You were so tall
How could you fall?

Some photographs of a summer's day
A little boy's lifetime away
Is all I've left of everything we've done
Like a pale moon in a sunny sky
Death gazes down as I pass by
To remind me that I'm but my father's son

I offer up to you
This tribute
I offer up to you
This tank park salute

tugs at the old heartstrings does that, brilliant, poignant etc....

I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

Dont mean to be picky but Hurt was Written by Trent Reznor aka Nine Inch Nails

Yup.... I like the J-Cash version better........ He recorded the song at a key time and i think that influences how the song is put across ...
Look at Bob Dylan his lyrics are all outstanding but when it comes to "singing" ....... Meh!
His songs sound better covered by other people

True! Whoever told Dylan he could sing needs shot!

Across the floor lie broken bowls of pride
Unlatch the door and scratch holes in the night
She'll be there someday, tides turn, winds change
You know, Oh you know.

A house of hopes and dreams I built one too
Drunk on gypsy violins like you
Ran naked through the flames and burnt like you.

Unbuttoned times when two laid down as one
Eyes on eyes where catherine wheels spun.
Now every stale day is a haywire highway
Alone, so alone.

A house of hopes and dreams I built one too
Danced upon the tables just like you
Swam the sea of dreams and drowned like you.

The cave of tears you choked and almost cried
Emotions horse's roped and staked inside.
Never could show her but somehow hoped to know her
Again, again, again to build
A house of hopes and dreams upon
a pack of painted cards;
To build a house of hopes and dreams
with bricks of loaded dice;
To build a house of hopes and dreams
with roulette wheels for stairs;
To build a house of hopes and dreams
Secured and bound with love,
With love, with love, with love, with love
Build strong and sure with love . . . . . .

A House of Hopes and Dreams - Pete Sinfield

Stars in your eyes,
Little one,
Where do you go to dream,
To a place,
We all know,
The land of make believe

Shadows,
Tapping at your window,
Ghostly,
Voices whisper will you come and play?

Not for all the tea in China,
Or the corn in Carolina,
Never,
Never ever
They're running after you babe

Run for the sun,
Little one,
You're an outlaw once again,
Time to change,
Superman,
Will be with us while he can,
In the land of make believe

Something,
Nasty in your garden's,
Waiting patiently,
'Till it can have your heart,

Try to go,
But it won't let you,
Don't you know it's out to get you,
Running,
Keep on running
They're running after you babe

Run for the sun,
Little one,
You're an outlaw once again,
Time to change,
Superman,
Will be with us while he can,
In the land of make believe

Your world is turning,
From night to day,
Your dream is burning far, far away

Into the blue,
You and I,
To the circus in the sky,
Captain Kids,
On the sand,
With the treasure close at hand,
In the land of make believe

In the land of make believe

Run for the sun,
Little one,
You're an outlaw once again,
Time to change,
Superman,
Will be with us while he can,
In the land of make believe

Run for the sun,
Little one,
You're an outlaw once again,
Time to change,
Superman,
Will be with us while he can,
In the land of make believe

(Little girl)
I've got a friend who comes to tea,
And no-one else can see but me,
He came today,
But had to go,
To visit you?
You never know...
