Ilkay just came on for Germany in their friendly against Saudi Arabia and seems to be getting boos and whistles from a section of the stands whenever he touches the ball, presumably from German “supporters”. I suppose it could also be Saudi supporters (though, less likely).

If it is ze Germans—and I am not passing judgement in any way—I imagine it is do to with the Erdogan episode.

When Ilaky was on the touch line waiting to come on Löw actually walked over beside him, turned to the crowd behind them, and gestured to clap him on. I think there was booing and whistling at that point, as well.

You do not have to imagine - it is because of the Erdogan episode. There was/is heavy discussions because of that in Germany. Erdogan and that he has so many votes from the Turks in Germany is a topic that does not go well in Germany especially with German (or half German) journalists prisoned in Turkey. That Özil does that mistake - he is as smart as a toast bread. Gündogan I thought is smarter. But he does business in Turkey in which he has help and permission by local government, has a lot fans within the turkish community etc.

Ilkay being booed at every single touch by a loud enough minority of German 'supporters' is just disappointing.
I guess they wouldn't be able to put their criticism in a complete sentence.

Saudi Arabia is not a bad team, I must say. Germany not sharp enough.

International football always seems to bring out the worst in supporters doesn't it.

Although Ilkay perhaps wadn't the smartest to say the leader of another country is his "leader", the German fans booing him sound about as bright as England's knuckle-draggers.

The problem is that as smart as Gündogan is he probably wanted to use this visit to Erdogan for his own interests. Gündogan has bought a office building of the city his parents are off for 5 millions and plans to build a 13-story-shopping centre there. In Turkey you do not get the permissions without help of Erdogan or his party. He just underestimated the impact this had on people in Germany - and no, it is not just the brown soup this time but a lot people that despise Erdogan because of his politics. The German FA always used him and Özil to show how "integration" functions...

Politics and football should never mix.

Absolutely agree.

Gündogan has basically been caught with his pants down. Being photographed with Erdogan in one thing, but presenting him with a signed city shirt with the message ‘For my president’ is just asking for trouble, and has caused a predictable shitstorm over here,

Imagine a similar situation with an England squad player. The press would have a field day.

Not if media lightning rod Sterling has anything to say about it. Rashford could spit on the queen and declare his hatred of the British army and they'd find a way to blame Sterling.
