Surely they can’t go back to before the corner was awarded?

They can't. They can check for penalties and potential red cards before the corner but not whether the corner was correctly awarded.

The commentator must have got it wrong then. The corner was taken and headed in with no other touches, so offside was impossible.

Perhaps they were looking at a possible foul just before it was headed.

So in the N. Ireland v Germany game N. Ireland had a free kick in a very promising position - just outside the box. German wall 10 yards back, so far so fair. Irish guy starts his run-up and at the same time a German lad runs out from the wall and was about 3 yards away from the ball before it was struck.

Surely that can't be right? But I don't know the rule for certain....

With a continental ref, and VAR officials, that was always likely to be given. They're pretty strict on that type of "handball".

If it's a direct free kick that's not allowed.
