Iranian General killed by US Drone.

Im scratching my head at that one. You are sending ballistic missiles to the country next door. Surely the local airports along the way would be closed being in a potential warzone?

The missiles which hit Iraq were fired from near the Iraq border, not hundreds of km away in Tehran.
it would be a bit like firing a missile from Aberdeen towards Iceland and closing Heathrow.

Thank you for that. Shows how little I know about the geography of the country. The Hannity Theory stands then. He mentions B52's going over on Faux. They get jittery and civilian lives are accidentally lost.

It's clearly nothing to do with the missiles fired at Iraq and it's all to do with SAM crews being on a heightened state of alert following US threats to bomb 52 sites, then totally fucking up.

Yes, that's the basis of the Hannity theory. I can quite imagine an individual missile battery either misunderstanding or not knowing what's going on. Whether it'll ever be known is a different thing. It is pretty easy to write conspiracies on this - e.g. Putin in Iran, then a Ukraine plane is shot down because Putin still wants to crush Ukrainian resistance. There's no evidence for it, just coincidence.

Iran is massive, well over six times the size of the UK.

Oh really? Now that I know it was all the fault of some crackpot TV-man and not the fault of the unfortunately"heightened state of alert Commander." Let's go ahead and give the commander a TMT medal of Honor, and hang the real culprit. The fucking news man making up his own shit in the studio.

Yuo. That's totally who's to blame here. :(

For fuck sake, no one thought they were about to get reigned on.
You know what, I'm just going to put this out there and say you've never been in a high pressure life and death situation?

You may have forgotten, but Iran had ringside seats to both Gulf War 1 & 2. In the nights leading up to the coalition forces landing troops on the ground there was wave upon wave of cruise missile strikes and bombing. Iran would have been expecting something similar; especially given that Hannity had blurted out that B-52's were on their way.

It has been reported that the missile system in question was the SA-15. It may have been equipped with IFF (Ident Friend or Foe), but there is nothing to say that system fitted and/or functioning. You'd be surprised how little situational awareness you get sat in the operators seat of a SAM system. You certainly don't get the pretty picture on the display like you see in all the movies. It takes a well trained operator to operate them effectively under pressure. SAM battery commanders would have been under extreme pressure. And bear in mind none of them will have fired that particular system in a live combat situation. You can run as many simulations as you like, but nothing prepares you for the real thing.

I could go into some depth on how an integrated air defence system works (or should work). Lets just say that a SAM is capable of operating as part of a system, linked to early warning radars, or autonomously. Hazarding a guess here, I would say that the system in question was operating autonomously (imminent threat; limited set-up time), and maybe with limited comm's. This means that the operators had very limited situational awareness outside of the field of view of their targeting radars.

Trump and Co have offered no plausible explanation as to why they chose this precise moment in time to execute a serving foreign military officer in a third party country. His actions stirred up tensions in the region, and create the pressure cooker situation where something like this was inevitable. Yes, the operator fired the shot, but the whole situation was set in motion by Trump's initial actions.

Although Seth has a pretty strong opinion on Trump, his thread's are always well researched and sourced.

There is pretty much no doubt an Iranian SAM battery operator let a missile off at a commercial airliner, but under these circumstances it was almost inevitable.

Reading Seth's thread the timelines certainly add up. If Hannity was privy to sensitive information, and he decides (or was instructed) to blurt out (incorrectly as it turns out) that 6 B-52 are headed to Iran, every single Surface to Air Missile battery commander in Iran will be on a heightened state of alert, and at that point ANYTHING that pops up on the targeting radar COULD be a legitimate target. They would have had 60 seconds at most to decide if to fire or not.
Those at Think Progress don't seem to have a high opinion of him. They seem to think he's only slightly better than Louise Mensch. That's not saying much.

I am about to go to the dentist due to a crown falling out of my gob this morning. Because I have spent to much time watching the news and eating sweets over the past couple of days no doubt.

Trumps fault.

If Iran was not kicking off with the Yanks it would be someone else. So there would still be idiots with anti aircraft weaponry radicalised into such a frenzy that they are just itching to shoot at something.

Its what Iran does.

As does the US and Russia !

He does rub some up the wrong way.

Maybe he doesn't get on with Judd Legum?
Could be that. I don't read a lot of Twitter anymore too many idiots on sides. I am familiar with Louise Mensch from there some time back. When I read he's not much better than her I thought it's like getting kicked in the stomach is better than being kicked in the balls. I don't want either.
