Ireland

Well I would have sung it for you, my dad used to sing lots of Irish songs, including this one, though he never went to Ireland. Wish I’d taken him.

Nice part of the world. Whereabouts did your grandad come from?
Templemore. A tiny little town. I spent a week there when I was about 13. Just to show the freak side of my personality, we drove from Eccles to Holyhead for the ferry on the night David White scored 4 at Villa Park.

Anyway - find memories of being there as a child but would love to go back as an adult. I wonder where to stay for a couple of night so I can have a decent night out and maybe just travel to Templemore for a day.

Templemore is a quiet town, probably because the police training academy is based there.
If you are not driving, Thurles is probably your best bet as it is not too far from Dublin by train.
If driving Roscrea and Cashel are nice too and easy to get to.
Killaloe is small but on the Shannon and near Lough Derg .
If you are staying in Thurles area, try to book when there is a hurling match on at Semple Stadium.

This is probably the best post you'll get on this area, I'd add Cahir as an option if you were driving but if you're not I wouldn't bother
