National turnout of 59.7%. It's the lowest figure in over a century (1923),the last time the turnout was less than 60%. It's the fourth election in a row that the figure has dropped. Which tells a tale. People are tired of mainstream politics over here.

I noticed just dipping in on RTE plenty of 'no party' candidates getting some votes.

Is that a protest against the system?

I think FF and FG going into coalition together changed the landscape.
People realise it’s very improbable that genuine change is likely.
The Left is so badly split and splintered into smaller and localised issues.
For Sinn Fein to actually have a chance of forming a coalition they would need a much higher percentage of the vote as the two main parties will always be around the low 20’s.

The only interesting thing now is, will the two main parties need another party to get over the 50%
Who would go in with them seeing the decimation of The Green Party in this election.

With proportional representation there is a genuine possibility of an independent candidate winning a seat on local or single issues.
Their vote in parliament can carry more weight than you’d expect in a very narrow majority government.

As I mentioned to Jimharri there is s downside, mainly the splitting of the left, but you also see ex mainstream party members going independent for various reasons and with PR they do stand a chance of winning and punching above their wight.

TBtF that Gerry’The Monk’ Hutch didn’t get the last seat in his constituency.
Watching the prick on the news earlier I was thinking what a gangster. Thankfully he didn’t get the transfers to take him over the line, because he was in poll position for a while.

America got Trump, Dublin Central nearly got this.

Labour got destroyed as a party because of Kelly and Irish water.
Yeah the Labour guy didn’t get in. He’s quite young. I think around 28 or so as he was in the same year in school as my mates son.
He was also hampered by the fact they newly put him in our constituency having come from another previously.

The social dems did quite well however nationwide.

FF and FG have 86 seats between them.
They just need two independents to get over the 87 mark (50%).
I wonder will they look to bring in SD or Labour for a comfortable majority in the house.
Both of those parties have said they wouldn’t coalesce with the incoming government without the other. FF have said that would be too cumbersome and wouldn’t do it.

Negotiations over the next couple of weeks.

Social Democrats in trouble already.

Eoin Hayes was elected on false pretences and should resign – Matt Carthy TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Director of Elections, Matt Carthy TD, has said that Social Democrats TD Eoin Hayes won his seat on false pretences and should resign.
Deputy Carthy made his comments after Eoin Hayes today gave false information about when he sold shares he held in a software firm that supplies technology to the Israeli Defence Forces.
Deputy Hayes today claimed he sold his Palantir shares before he entered politics, and has since been forced to issue a statement to clarify that this was not true.
He sold them a month after he was elected, and the value of his shares rose by nearly €100,000 since the Israeli bombardment of Gaza commenced in October of last year.
Teachta Carthy said:
“This is an incredibly serious matter. Had this information been in the public domain two weeks ago, it is my very firm belief that Eoin Hayes would not be a TD, and that Chris Andrews would have been re-elected.
“Eoin Hayes profited personally from a company that benefited from Israeli breaches of international law.
“He misled journalists today, and was not forthcoming in terms of the period of time in which he held these shares and the time in which he divested from those shares.
“He was therefore elected on false pretences, and I believe the honourable thing for him to do is to resign his seat.
“There are a number of political parties, Sinn Fein being one, and the Social Democrats being another, who have been very clear and unequivocal in terms of our position of those who profit through companies, shareholdings or otherwise from the occupation, annexation and genocide in Gaza.
“Voters will have taken it as a given that any Social Democrats candidate would have a similar disposition and would not have allowed themselves to be in a position where they held €200,000 worth of shares in a company that profited quite substantially from the Israeli attacks.
“I firmly believe that if the electorate of Dublin Bay South were aware of the information that we are aware of today that Eoin Hayes would not be a TD, and that Chris Andrews, somebody who has a long standing record in support of the people of Palestine as well as the people of Dublin, would be.”
