Seems like a good suggestion, really. You said “we reap what we sow”, getting what you deserve is a part of the definition of that sentence, but I don’t want to argue grammatical semantics or fall out with you over it.
Displacement is an international issue and always has been, it’s massively increased more recently due to the knowledge of what they can get if they come, this has triggered many to make the journey that otherwise or previously wouldn’t have.
All parties can do something, what we do with them now isn’t working, what we offer is incentivising them to come and that needs to be stripped back.
Them there’s a wider argument for opening a processing centre in Calais to allow genuine asylum seekers and then have a zero tolerance policy for those entering outside of that. That’s my suggestion.
Whether France would allow that, I don't know. They'd probably charge us fucking billions and make us say "siv au plait" over and over! Could save us in the long run, though.
"Around 42% of asylum claims are approved at the initial decision stage. While this grant rate is lower than the peak of 76% in 2022, it remains significantly higher than historical approval rates before 2019."
So that's about half at the moment.
