Irvine Welsh

After Trainspotting (film) came out I went on to read the rest. He's brilliant and can't wait for the next book. To add to that he stays around my neighborhood in Chicago when he's here apparently (according to the afterword in Crime). Along woth Brett Easton Ellis, he is one of two modern writers I read everything from.

If it hasn't already been mentioned, Irvine Welsh is doing a book signing of Skagboys today at Waterstones on Deansgate. 12 onwards I believe.

Didn';t City get a mention in one of his books? Can't remember if it was Trainspotting or Marabou Stork. Something about the character living for a while in Manchester and going to see both football teams but preferring City because it was 'more real' or something like that.
Bob, can't believe you get to read stuff like Trainspotting at school. In my day it was all Virginia Woolf and Jane Austen shite

I can't believe its took him until college to read trainspotting! It was marabou stork M13, the character stayed in ancoats and preferred City. We also got a mention In the acid house. When Brian is shagging his gf he watches final score and we beat forest 3-0.

Aww Shit. I'd have loved to have gone to that.

Never mind. I plan on getting the book when I get paid anyway.

I just finished If You Liked School You'll Love Work, which is 3 short stories which contain the trademark twisted sense of humour. And then the main story which is actually very good too.

The problem for Welsh is he'll always have the Monkey of Trainspotting on his back because it's such a brilliant book and set the bar pretty high. His other work may not be on par with it, but it gets pretty close at times.

An average Irvine Welsh story is miles better than most of the literary dross out there today.

His early stuff was spellbinding, Trainspotting, Acid House, Marabou Stork Nightmares. But found him a bit of a one trick pony since. Filth was a bit 'meh' with a twist you could see from 100 pages in. The chef one was pretty crap. Not bothered with Porno or Glue so don't know if he ever got his mojo back.
Mind you, as Kev is one of the handful of fellow John Fante fans on here, I'll take his word on good books as bond.

I agree with this, I read all his earlier stuff and really enjoyed it, especially Trainspotting, but started to get very samey.

Was Filth the one about a copper who had something eating his colon or something? If so that's the none that put me off him, it was pretty lame.

Wish id've known this! I'm a fan, have read Trainspotting, Porno and Glue. Going to get Skagboys in the next week or so!

Porno is massively underrated. Will always be compared to trainspotting because of its nature as a direct sequel but it quality in its own right, the characterisation is brilliant. Still maintain that Nikki is the sexiest female character in literature!
