Apparently, the individual who made the (now deleted) tweet has since apologised, and claimed that he was threatened with being mugged when he arrived in the city for the Conservative party conference. Leaving the political point scoring out please, did he have a point, or was he commenting while upset. I don't doubt that it will have less than desirable areas. All cities have them. Even Manchester isn't all sunshine and roses. I'll leave the poll open for a few days.

The centre is like any UK city. Jewellery Quarter is pretty cool.

No, it's not a dump, any more than Nottingham is. The centre isn't in Manchester's league for pubs and music and food (Balti triangle apart), but there's some glorious Victorian and Edwardian architecture and good museums.

The suburbs (and I don't mean the Black Country) are incredibly dull, particularly to the east toward Solihull.

Don't mind Brum for a day/night out. Its significantly better now Gang Central (New Street Station) has become Grand Central. Brindley Place is fine but Broad St is still tacky. Christmas markets are smaller than Manchester but are still OK.
