Is it a case of the old and new fans? (slightly lengthy)

Wasn't sure whether to put this on the transfer forum or here, but here seems more appropriate.

After reading the Donovan thread on the Transfer Forum, and noticing the massively obvious split, I couldn't help wonder if there are so many new fans amongst us now that they only want big name signings, or if it is also a combination of older fans who feel it is our right to only get big name signings, possibly through decades of garbage?

My personal point of view is that not so long ago, and i'm talking as near as 3 or 4 years ago here, we were buying players like Samaras, Musampa, Beasley et al. Further beyond that the ones who remember the dark days remember the Lee Bradbury's, the Wassell's and the Simon Traceys of this world. My point of view further goes onto express that we are now in the mix to buy the Tevez's, the Yaya Toures, the Balotellis etc, BUT that doesn't mean we shouldn't be looking at players like Donovan to either enhance the squad, or to make the first team gel with his 'average' presence, or work-like rate presence if that is a better phrase. 4 years ago, being linked with Donovan would have been amazing, and I see nothing at our club, (other than players currently, {please remember that word}, here for the money), which has changed which shouldn't mean were should not be pleased to be linked with Donovan. Many posts on the Donovan thread came across as either posters with a complete lack of knowledge, or they just think we should only be linked with the big names because our owners are rich. Disassociate our owners from the brand of MCFC, and we are still a trophy-less club, but a trophy-less club who has massively rich owners. United brought in Park and they have Fletcher there already, and that, to us, would be the equivilent of Donovan. Park and Fletcher do the jobs no-one likes to acknowledge, and are not, (other than in his homeland in Parks case), massive names which get the blood racing. We NEED players like that, (Donovan), to get us into that position to challenge for trophies. We can all acquire a club on CM and buy multi-million pound signings for each position, but the liklihood is it will fail, miserably. Players like Donovan gel teams, they make them tick, but most importantly where we are right now, we shouldn't be getting above our station thinking we are better than players like that, and some posts on the Donovan thread indicated the authors of those posts think we are better than that.

What do you all think? Do you think we have an element of fans who think we should only buy the big names?

All this is in good faith towards ALL posters, not slating anyone if they do believe we should only buy the best. :-)

The divide is more (IMHO) between kippers wanting to see an IRL Fifa footy manager team and the old school who rely on team tactics and just fancy players that would fit into a certain gameplan.

There´s often an age gap there as well.

Fair point, but I've given up stressing miself about who we're gonna buy, who we might buy and who we need to buy etc. That's Mancini's job and there must be something about Donovan that he likes for him to consider buying him considering the money he has at his disposal.

I also agree that every team has a chasing pack of players eg: Park, Kalou, Obi Mikel, Benayoun etc who would almost certainly be regular starters at Europa League challenging clubs, but who accept that to have the chance of some silverware to show for their careers in football, they must be prepared to play 2nd fiddle and to trade this off against the prospect of regular 1st team football and very little chance of winning any major honours. When was the last time we read that Park, Kalou, Carrick etc were agitating for a move because of the lack of regular 1st team football?

All major teams have players like this who wont rock the boat if not selected week in week out so in that respect I suppose if Donovan is this type of player, signing him makes sense.

I think Mancini is clearly the kind of manager who will buy someone because he thinks they can do a specific job - the same job that one of those cogs does in a gearbox. He will look at the end product and how he can best achieve that. We are expected to be better than last season - there may be higher 'targets' set by others but whatever Mancini's been told he has to achieve he will go for the acquisitions he thinks will best achieve that.

Mancini wouldn´t tell everyone at a press-conference that he fancied a player if he was serious...

He was just polite to the hosts.

I think some people crave success they simply only see the benefits in signing 'names'. Its a short term craving for a quick fix - it makes us/them believe success is simply round the corner.
I think there could also be a generation thing, some have seen good or great city sides, other have lived through turd and turder.
A 'name' helps dillute the turd and turder memories and gives us something to boast about.....right now before a ball has been kicked.

Personally speaking I worry about us turning into what R Madrid were a few years back - names and feck all else. I still prefer the home grown working class growler who runs his arse off for the shirt and fans.

Still cant stay out of the transfer forum for more than 5 mins though!

I think it could also be an age thing. Because i am 18 but have supported city as soon as i got into football. They're not just my football team i support. They are my love and my passion.
I may be naive in thinking " yes i know what we should have tactically" but i'm not going to lie. I probably think i know what i'm on about. I for example think that donovan would be a good addition. Theres so many games this season. We need this sort of quality. We should'nt be all big headed and think we are entitled to everyone and anyone. We need the players who do the job and bloody well. Donovan to me fits that criteria.

Didn't Musampa and Beasley come on loan? We couldn't even afford them. Beasley even got grief for wearing red boots and changed them for blue. Players got away with wearing red boots too easily last season for me. Anyone with red boots on next year should get grief, it's not on.
Donovan could do a job for us but is he better than swp? not for me. Will he be able to play more games than RSC? of course. Is it a rumour to get all worked up about? No. Can the scousers win the title now they've signed Joe Cole and some sweaty defender no one's ever heard of? No. In fact I wouldn't be suprised to see Donovan going to Liverpool. I'm off to see what odds I can get on that.

Anyway..Mancini is an old fox that have been at this game before.

He knows what he needs, he knows what Abu Dhabi demands from him.
I´m not worried really.
