They were discussing it on Jeremy Vine this afternoon and The Wright Stuff this morning after a check-out women at Sainsbury's refused to serve a women who made a phone call whilst at the till

I personally think its very rude and there is no need(except emergency) to be on the phone while someone is serving you*

So I ask do any fellow Bluemooners behave this way? And is this a one off or a sign of the erroision of manners in Britain today?

*i cannot stand being served by someone who is talking to their collegue so I appriciate that it can work both ways

Unfortunately in our society people just cannot go a couple of minutes without checking their phones. I saw a sign at the Virgin desk in Piccadilly Station in town that said you wouldn't be served if you were using your mobile. I agree with it 100%. If you want to make a phone call, then fuck off and make your phone call, if you want to get served then crack on and make your purchase - you can't do both.

Not for me, if i'm at the checkout and the person turns to the nearby checkout and starts to chitchat I always say " don't let my shopping get in the way of your chatting will you " they soon pay attention. People that are on a mobile in ignorance of other people are plain rude and really have small minds, same with tossers on them whilst driving !

Hate my mobile. I am on it 6 hours a day. Sick of it.

I find it rude, especially if you dont even bother to look at or acknowledge the person working at the checkout.

It happens sometimes in my job. If the person doesn't curtail the conversation quickly I just get up and then let them sit there after the call until I return. Not for long, just to let them know.
Believe it or not, some employers have said it happens in job interviews too.

makes me laugh hearing people on their mobiles at the shop going,im at tesco's or wherever.they seem unable to put them down for 5mins,there should be a medical name for it.

I'm glad Virgin have a sign, however Sainsbury's apologised to the customer(gave her vouchers) on the cashiers behalf!

Fair play to the checkout attendant and Sainsbury's should have had a bit of back bone.

Height of fucking ignorance.

Treat people how you wish to be treated. She's only paying £20 for a mid week shop it isn't the ritz where you can do what you want.

One of the contributers on the Vine show though that seen as though the customer was 'paying the staff' wages then she should be able to do what she liked and not have to listen to her 'life story'. The other cintributer ripped her to pieces, she had no argument as she repeated the 'life story' line 3 times.

If she doesn't have the decency to say hello, please and thank-you then I don't think she should have a place in civilised society

It's a problem alright but too many people nowadays think it's their right to be a **** and do as they please. "Why shouldn't I be allowed to speak on MY phone when I want?"
Because its fucking rude doesn't compute with a lot of people. Wankers.

I think if you are just getting a pack of cigs or a butty its ok as long as you acknowledge the cashier and are smiling and polite. Pretty rude if you're doing a big shop and stay on the phone for ages. All about context really.

In a word. No. It's rude. I hate mobile phones. You get people at the gym using them for christs sake.

Please and thank you costs nothing..... Sainsbury's should have given the £10 compo to the checkout girl for highlighting the situation. Instead they gave it to the ignorant bitch on the mobile.
