Is it time to make the Carling Cup a battle of Britain?

Thanks but no thanks. Though I do agree the League Cup needs a shake up. Personally I woudl love to see a quota on the number of English and U21 players in the competition - a minimum of 5 English / trained in England for x years before 21st Birthday, and 5 U21 players any nationality, per squad per game.

Standard of most Scottish teams is more attuned to the FA Vase, or whatever it is called today. But you can't open up a league cup to teams who are not in your leagues.

Congrats to Swansea and Bradford by the way. Made for a more interesting competition, but I still didn't watch the final.

fuck the porridge gobblers. ;)

The League Cup final in 1976 was one of the best days of my life so far.

Obviously been bettered since but I still remember it fondly.

There were two of God's chosen in that '76 team. Will have to have a large medicinal one now to recover from that insult. ;-)

As to the proposal. No! Only someone who has never been north of the Antonine on a bleak, barren night in the depths of winter would countenance such madness. You'd get a warm welcome, mind.

League cup should be completely dropped. Pointless competition that makes too busy schedule even worse.

Bollocks.

I don't think Swansea, Bradford, Villa or many other teams share that opinion.

It's a good competition for the lower clubs as well as the big teams as it enables them to play fringe players if they wish, providing them with match experience they wouldn't have the opportunity to get if it wasn't around.

1. Pump more money into the competition so that winning a game is financially rewarding. I think a European spot is already a big enough reward for the outright winner.

2. Scrap FA Cup replays and, again, pump more money into the competition itself so that for winning games you get more money.

After the way Celtic and Rangers fans behaved on their last two visits to our ground (plus Celtic in Dublin) it would be crazy to let them into the Carling Cup. I am aware that most Rangers and Celtic fans are fine but even they must concede that both clubs still have a significant number of sectarian thugs who support them. They can come in when they have lanced the poison.

Your national team will never make any success at summer international tournaments with amount of games played during the season. It doesn't help Premier League clubs in Europe too.
Why does everything in football in this country have to benefit the premier league clubs? Many supporters of league clubs have had an otherwise pointless season brightened by a good league cup run. And then there's the financial benefit to lower league sides - ask Bradford, twice recently in administration, how pointless they find the league cup after this season's £2m windfall?

Bradford success is once in a history.

Than there is FA Cup where Bradford can make much more money with good run - with both cup prizes and gate money.

I just find 2 domestic cup competitions ridiculous thing.
Once in a history in the sense that it's 5 years since the last time a team from the 4th tier of english football reached the league cup semi final.

The competition has been around now for over 50 years and is traditionally an easier competition for lower league sides to advance in, particularly since they scrapped 2 legged ties. By my reckoning there must have been over a dozen finalists from outside the topflight and has even been winners from the 3rd division. Personally I like the competition for some of the upsets it produces, I can still remember watching United lose 3 nil at home to 4th division York City back in the 90's.

Anyway, I'll leave you to it - I'm off to find a stream to watch Utd.

Keep the Europa League entry but make it strictly a Football League tournament. No more Premie League teams plus it gives Football League teams a shot at Europe.
