what do you mean by the energy industry - the whole thing end to end including the gas and oil fields?Surely we should be using the profits as a nation to cut household bills rather than line pockets of shareholders.
There is a half way house - the Norwegian model which means from the start they run a nationalised oil and gas extraction industry alongside privately owned companies such as shell. They have other measures in place which prevent them being screwed by companies selling their own gas back to them + with the profits from gas and oil they started a fund for the long term financial good of their country - currently has approx $1.4 trillion of assets. SNP had advocated a similar model way back.
Cant see the point of privatising the likes of British Gas - we could still be held for ransom over gas prices. There seems to be no such thing as a strategic energy policy from the government though - that looks at key stuff like gas storage and ensures we have enough to ride out price bubbles like this one.
The current situation stinks to high heaven though, pushing many families into fuel poverty whilst Shell profits go through the roof and refuse to apply a windfall tax to help.
They are fucking bastards.
