Is It True That City Had The Chance To Sign Figo?

Larsson signed for Celtic in 1995 I think. Reid was sacked long before then. Larsson only played for Feyenoord for 2 seasons and even they were after the Reid City era.

Well, this goes to prove that Peter Reid talks through a hole in his arse, lol.

Hold the back page. You maybe right actually. Just 'wikid' it. Reid was sacked August 93, Larsson went to Feyenoord that summer, so Reid may well have saved his job by signing him! I bow to your knowledge sir and apologies for questioning it.

Just dont let it happen again ;)

For a player I haven't thought of to come up on this thread isn't unusual however I just flicked over to SSN and Larsson announces his retirement!!

Maybe he is reading this and realised that he's never going to get the chance again to play for City and decided to call it a day

I heard we knocked back messi when he was 14 because he was to small for his age.

That's a remixed story of Diego Maradona having a trial at Sheffield United and being turned away for his size.

As for Figo, if he had come to us he wouldn't have become the player he did.

We're both right! 2 posts behind my last one, we were offered him in 97 under Clarke but we turned him down and he went to Cellik!

It was deffo Peter Reid who was in charge when we were linked with Figo, I think it was a year before barca signed him. I remember it on the back page of the evening news, £1.5m from memory! He was at Sporting Lisbon at the time. Believe it or not Swales wouldn't cough up! I think we ended up with Ricky Holden instead!

Yeah it was Peter Reid for sure, we played a tournament that Sporting Lisbon were in 1992 and Figo stood out against us and City made a enquiries and thats it. Heard this in an interview a while back.

Though i wouldn't dream of comparing him to Figo as that would be downright daft, and by no means a top player, but a tale that sums up the penny-pinching days well was Mark Schwarzer. Came here on trial in '96, manager wanted him, player wanted to sign, asked for £550 a week, we wouldn't go above £500 and he signed for Bradford. Went on to be one of the best 'keepers in the country.

To add to this catalogue of misses under Swales we were rumoured to have had first refusal to sign Ardiles and Villa before they went to Spuds and Alan Oakes recommended a certain Ian Rush to City when he was manager at Chester.

Whilst we may or may not have had a chance to sign the players mentioned previously, Ipswich Town actually had Ruud Gullit, John Barnes, and Paul Gascoigne on trial and turned them all down. Now that's got to hurt!!
