Is one more CB all we need to compete for a top 4 position?

I see a CB/LB as needed, I'm not comfortable with Garrido being our only backup for Bridge and Bridge also having no competition. Also two of our defenders are also looking likely to cover the DM spot which puts further strain on the back 4.

A decent midfielder who will be content to sit on the bench behind Barry/Ireland (either an old pro or a class youngster) would be good now that Elano has gone would be useful. Maybe Hughes thinks SWP can cover that role with Bellamy providing cover for that RFWD position most assume Tevez is going to sit in. Assuming TBH and Benjani are history...

Given - Taylor (Hart)

Zabba/Richards
Toure/Dunne
Kompany/Onuoha
Bridge/Garrido????

DeJong/(either Zabba or Kompany)
Ireland/SWP
Barry/Johnson

Tevez/Bellamy (Weiss)
Ade/RSC
Robinho/Petrov

That second team is basically our first team from 2 seasons ago that got 9th (with better strikers than 07-08!)

Looking at our squad, and taking into account the departures that has taken place, if we get Lescott for somewhere around £30-35m (as we seem to be desperate to get proven Premiership CBs), do you think we are set, or do you feel that we need more depth in central midfield or another defender (a new right back maybe, or a CB backup). What do you think? Which positions do you see as our weak points after 35m Lescott, and are they so weak that you feel we need to bring someone in?

We wont even pay £20 million for Lescott, so I dont know where you get £30 million from.

There have been rumours of a midfielder coming in, and with Elano gone I can see them going after somebody like Wes Snejder from real Madrid.

A left footed centre half would be great.Lescott will come when we go to around 22/23 million.

Would like to see an attacking midfield player as we are thin on the ground with them. And really we only have 2 wingers...SWP and Petrov...so would like to see cover for them.

But i don't really care who he brings in...i'm still in a bit of shock when i look at our team now, what with Tevez,Ade,Robbie,Barry,Toure and Given, they are all players that 2 years ago we would never have dreamed of getting here.

its great isnt it ..i've been drawing up loads of different options for different games.. imagine how chuffed Hughes is ...
I do think SWP will be included more often that not .. and that we have 8 guaranteed starters for every game providing they are fit..

1- Given
2- Toure
3- Bridge
4- Ireland
5- Barry
6 -Robinho
7 -Tevez
8 -Adebeyor

with SWP & De Jong, Ned, Bellers,
Komps* when fit being in there I would think !! ..
Dont know about you but that Screams TOP 4 to me !! ..

the answer to the orginal question would be yes one more CB and top 4 is possible

The BIG question is which season??

the 09/10 season is starting a little bit to soon and the player need to gel as a team as a result top 6 maybe the final position (I hope)

it will be the season afterward with 2-3 quality addition will be the season to break the top 4

saying that if the team gels quickly and we can nick a few result during this time who know the top 4 may go this season

ffs 30-35mil for joleon bastard lescott, you do realise that this would be our biggest transfer fee of the summer and break the british record fee, i do not think so somehow.

We need another centre back that is without doubt. I think some of us need to forget about top 4 for now. I'd be happy with 6th. Before we can compete and beat the likes of Arsenal to 4th lets see if we can beat Everton, Villa and Spurs to 5th or 6th. We were 10th last season so finishing 6th is a decent improvement.

In an ideal world I wouldn't allow sentiment to stand in the way & I'd replace our current defence the only exception being Bridge although I'd sign a player to provide proper competition for him.

We need another top class CB, RB and LB (to challenge Bridge). I also believe we need another quality creative midfielder to provide competition to Ireland and another box to box defensive midfielder in the mould of Essien or Yaya Toure. If we could sign another 5 players and get rid of Garrido, Etuhu, Dunne, TBH, Benjani, I think we could seriously make an impact without the nagging worry about our defence and what would happen if we had injuries, loss of form or suspensions in a couple of key positions.

I know everyone's hoping that Johnson will return to the form, promise & fitness of 2 years ago, but according to Hughes today MJ's had another set-back with the same 'abdominal' injury that has put his career on hold and will be out for at least another 2 weeks, plus he looks like Porky Pig! Hughes can't afford to take a chance with him as we need to hit the ground running.

The media are already showing our pre-season stats as played 4, won 1, drew 1, lost 2, scored 2 and no strikers have scored yet! I fully expect this to change once the season starts, but I feel that everyone is lining up to shoot us down in flames if we don't hit the ground running albeit that our team will need time to gel.
