Is the World what you thought it would be?

I think things are way better now and better than I expected. I just wish I was younger to see more advancements.

1) Travel. We can fly anywhere now at reasonable cost, something my Grandad could've only dreamt off. World cruises are within reach of working class people. No longer just for the very wealthy.

2) Technology. We have in our pockets a computer that can store 10.000 books, 1000 movies, a million photo's, can tell us the answer to almost anything. Stream almost every song ever recorded. Stream TV shows and movies. Act as a brilliant camera and Video recorder. Store our diary, calender, do word games, watch sport, use as an Encyclopedia, name plants, planes, ships. I can read The Manchester Evening News in Australia every day.
TV's now you can have home cinema with full surround sound. 100" screens in Full HD. Fully Automatic washing machines/dryers. Brilliant Fridge Freezers, Microwaves.

3) Cars. When I was a kid somebody buying a new car was like an event, blimey he's rich. Now it's no big deal, most working people can afford a new car.

4) Health. Massive improvements in health, most cancers are now curable if caught in time. Artificial heart valves (40 years ago I wouldve just died a slow painful death), artificial limbs, think of Para Olympics, Pacemakers, etc. people now living longer than ever, preventative treatments for Asthma. Much better anesthetics for surgery, most disease's like Polio, Measles, Whooping Cough wiped out. Less childhood deaths.

5) Food. I never knew what a Mango or Cantalupo Melon tasted like, never probably heard of them as a kid. Now we have an abundance of food from all over the world. Curries, Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian, the list goes on. Supermarkets stuffed with choice and you can even get home delivery if you dont have a car. (My Mother would've died for that)

6) Choice. Basically, you have heaps more choice in everything you do or buy.

7) Smoke. Thankfully, work, public transport, pubs, clubs cafes are now not buried in carcinogenic cigarette smoke.

Keep your Good Old days for me :)
Most working people can nowhere near afford a new car. Nowhere near.

We can not fly anywhere at reasonable cost. It is ludicrously expensive.

I agree about all of the advances in science which mean better health. This seems evident to me.

However, I'm not entirely convinced just how much of a net gain there is. This is because, as humanity makes technological progress, the expectations placed on workers increase, so rather than the advances being used to improve the lives of the general population, they are used as an excuse to demand more from people so that, really, a small privileged minority greatly benefit at the expense of everyone else.

I can't speak for you, but the work life of me and everyone around me is more demanding and more stressful than ever.

The older I have got the more I now realise that the increased leisuretime they were talking about was actually unemployment, I am not for one minute saying the standard of living hasn't improved but I really question if the quality of life has improved.
The increased leisure time is there - but it's only for the privileged few.

I can't speak for England mate but the roads here are full of new cars.

And loads of bluemooners have been all over the world. Even just to City games.
Ive read that many times on here.

As for the price aren't European flights dirt cheap ?

And .... @Blue Mist has just been to Australia and back :)

You are correct life is still tough though. There all these things to make life easier but with no money all is not obtainable. I have a lovely lady and 3 good young sons. But I have to work hard to provide for them. The world is better but you have to be able to afford it. Its tough for people who cannot.

I think people thought a faster, more assessable, more connected world would make us all happier. Not sure it’s the case. I’m connected to my work 24/7 now with emails and calls. I also talk to more people on here and more friends on WhatsApp than I actually do in real life…

That's the down side. I miss the little lad to bits :-(

The world is getting worse, year on year, and i've thought that for a while now. Compare now to even the early 2010's and 2000's.

- Cost of living absolutely outrageous compared to the average working salary
- Over importance and reliance on social media
- PC Brigade, everyone offended by everything and anything.
- Brexit
- Covid
- The absolute shambles of a government (UK)
- The Media
- Genders. How the fuck are there 58 genders out there all of a sudden?
- The price of a fucking cup of coffee.
- Poverty still hugely prevalent, and only going to get worse with the rising cost of living.

Life just seemed much simpler, and enjoyable. I also feel kids these days will never know what it was like to have a childhood without such a reliance on phones/tablets, social media, and actually going outside and enjoying the outdoors. These days kids are constantly glued to their phones, obsessed with instagram likes and constantly comparing their lives to others.

Basically, the world is fucked.

I was looking forward to one of those jet back packs that was in the James Bond film.

Can’t let 4 go unchallenged.
Most cancers are definitely not curable.
life expectancy has been falling for some years now.
Polio, measles and whooping cough have not been wiped out. Measles is on the increase in the U.K.

and as for world cruises for working class people, you are joking aren’t you?

Is the World what you thought it would be?

There’s not an animal in the world that comes up with a question like this. It’s just the most clever specie that does. Coincidentally the one that does f€cks it up big time.

Every animal adapts its surroundings to fit its needs as best it can. We're just really good at it.

There's this sort of nihilistic hopelessness that seems to have coincided with the rise of social media and its not really a true reflection of events. The world has never been more ethical, never been more healthy, never been more free than it currently is today. Humans are, by far, the most successful and nicest species that has ever arisen in the entire Universe that we can tell.

You talk about the bad. There is no species on Earth that will be attacked by something and then defeat it and nurse it back to health in the way that humans do with animals all of the time. There is no species who will protect other species for no other reason than kindness like many humans do from Save the Whales to vegans.

By almost any metric that you care to measure, humans are the most ethical and also the most powerful species that has ever arisen. This doesn't mean that we're perfect or that there aren't societal challenges to face, but there's too much of a focus now on the bad without the celebration of all of the good things happening in the world and the lack of balance is hurting everyone.

You might want to rephrase that.

I just crack on with it the best I can, keep my head down and avoid outside noise.
I quite like the way it's gone so far.
If there were hover boards I wouldn't own one and if there were food pills I wouldn't eat them.
Bluemoon is about as technical my life gets these days and that's enough for me.

I could easily reply at length. But this is no discussion for a forum of any kind. You see things your way. I see it my way.

we can put man on the moon, transfer organs between different people, all i've ever wanted was a fishing rod that catches fish all the time :)

oooh and a pocket that never runs out of money :)

Never underestimate capitalism's ability to squander any apparent social benefit. Take something universally considered a good thing, like women's lib allowing women to enter the workplace. Over time, this creates a market where prices are set according to two-income households, so parents who want to stay at home can't afford the rent. When I was growing up, my mum either stayed at home or worked part time. Nowadays, I don't know many people who stay at home while their partner works and can still afford a mortgage. If you're competing for housing with two-income households, then you have no choice but to do the same yourself.

I think with innovation, you can end up with three things. Firstly existing jobs become more demanding and require higher levels of responsibility (the checkout lady). Secondly, jobs can automated and disappear (all of the other checkout workers). Thirdly, jobs actually get deskilled because more of the responsibility is taken centrally, and as a result become less secure or more poorly paid.

In my industry (language teaching), it's the third, and you end up spending more of your time teaching a course that has been planned centrally by people who have never met your students. Ironically, I unwittingly found myself on the other side of that when I created a course and then saw the school advertising for teachers on a zero hour contract for a pathetic £10-15 per teaching hour on the grounds that it was "already prepared" (which anyone who works in teaching knows is always a bullshit promise).
