Is this ethical?

She already (luckily) knew I was opening a new account. I only used the same bank because they know who I am and I didn't have to provide i.d and shit like that. I only did it because I'd done 84 hours in work one week and got pissed off because she was going through the statement and asking why I'd took £40 out with me, then drew another 30 out, then 2 hours later, another 20.
I just think it seems like double standards because my mate's mrs binbagged him and when he went to check his savings account, his mrs had drawn £11,000 pounds out, leaving him with £4000. Nobody told him she was drawing out such a wedge and there's nothing he can do about it.
I believe I'm being reasonable and have told my mrs I'll give her £300 a week but if I do shitloads of overtime, I'm not going to answer to anyone how I spend my money. I'll get in touch with the bank and tell them that their indiscretion has put us on the brink of divorce.

I had a strange thing, kinda related. Me and my ex have a joint account, her little keypad thingy broke so she requested a new one a couple of weeks ago, and they addressed it to me. Mine was in perfect working order, and I have access to several accounts with this bank, she only has the one account. Why would they address her replacement keypad to me?
Was the keypad for her individual account or for the joint account?
Her current account is with a different bank. The only account she could access with the keypad is our joint one. I on the other hand have savings, current and credit accounts with the same bank. Maybe I was just the first one named on our joint? No idea.

It's out of order mate, she should have her own account and you yours (that you pay into anyway by the sounds of it), nothing to do with the bank "you're probably aware... but just in case 'ave this" bullshit. String 'em up.

-- Tue Jul 02, 2013 2:34 pm --

Moral of the story for your mate is, don't place so much cash somewhere anyone else except you can access it.

I assume it was addressed to you, not just sent to your address. It might be because it was the joint account that you were the first name on the account. However, that doesn't sit right with me. You are not authorised to act on the behalf of the other member of a joint account are you? Yet, them sending you this little keypad could give you this ability, albeit it potentially fraudulently.
My conclusion? They shouldn't have done it.

Its tough coming to some arrangement with the other half about financial stuff. Especially if one of you likes to save (me) and the other likes to splash the cash (her). If I said I was off to buy a brand new M5 in the morning she'd just say 'ooh thats nice'...

Best way we can find is we have a joint account which our wages get paid in to and all the bills come out, then our own accounts which we transfer a set amount of spending money in to to spend as we please. Whats left goes in to the savings account. All the accounts are linked so there's no hiding anything.

joking apart, this kind of revalation did lead to divorce for a friend of mine (yes, a friend). she called her bank with a standard enquiry and the bank worker on the other end of the line mentioned an account which she wasn't aware of. turned out that this was the husband's "running away fund". she challenged him on it and they were separated within days. pretty sure it does breach DPA but agree with others that using a different bank for your secret accounts is probably the safest option.
