Is watching football better on the telly?

Going to the match is infinitely better as an experience.

The TV equivalent is going to the pub and watching it with your mates.

TV gives you more scope for analysis, as long as the camera angle is wide enough.

TV is infinitely warmer too.

No looking for parking.
No queues for the toilet
No queues for getting a pint nor paying £7 .00 a pint ;)
Warm
No fucking long tailbacks on that bastard M56 to Manchester.
No queueing to get home
No early leavers
No fucker stopping you from watching the game whilst asking you to stand up so they can go for a piss
Only thing I miss nowadays are the wonderful Chips, Peas and Gravy from the chippy next to Maty D`s.

I'm not talking about the experience.
Clearly, going to the match is the better experience.

I mean to see the game, watch the action and have a critical view of what is happening.

The days of crappy footage on crappy small TVs is over. I can watch a match in glorious HD on my 65" TV being filmed from multiple angles, close to the action.

I can't see this being worse than stuck in the cheap seats at a game, not seeing what's really going on at the other end of the pitch.
I was stood at back of bottom tier behind the nets for the last derby. I don't look at the big screens. All, and I mean all, the action was down the other end. I saw precisely fuck all.
Different seats offer much better views and I often wonder why Pep doesn't sit higher up to see the whole game.

General reminder that I’m a Newcastle fan.

Going to a match is always going to be better. I believe to call yourself a supporter, you have to go to games where possible, otherwise you are a fan, or in the case of the red tags (and friends Chelsea & Spurs) a fucking customer.

Anyway getting past that. In terms of being able to see the match and what’s going on, I think watching on TV can be better. If you are low down then you can often at some stadiums not see what’s happening at the other side clearly, or accurate player positioning.
For as much stick as we get for having stands that are high up, it actually offers great views if you wish to see tactics and positioning of players.

I love watching the game on TV, but there is no substitute to being at the game. To see the whole pitch, the movement, the space, and the players with the vision to take the opportunities is never realised on TV. You also don't have to deal with the inane 'bantz' and meaningless historical stats exchanged between pundits with clear favourites. The time for stadium sounds only across all broadcasters is nigh.

Why do you get filmed from multiple angles?

I used to love watching the matches in the stadium, but the best thing was when you could watch the highlights afterwards on MOTD or whatever. I wish there had been full match replays in the Maine Road days.

From the purely 'watching it' point of view, of course it is. You get close ups, replays, VAR information, and most importantly the best view in the stadium.
As an experience though, it doesn't come close to going to the game.

It's a bit like listening to your favourite band's album - the studio version is very professional with all the errors ironed out, but you can't beat going seeing them live - warts and all.

Unfortunately that experience is long gone for me going West Ham, just surrounded by moaners and tourists, everyone on their iPhones and it’s all a cringeworthy experience. Season ticket here 30 years, chucked it in last year and don’t miss it one bit - helps we’ve turned shit.
Much prefer Pub, mates all there, get a pint when I want and all round better experience.

Tv coverage is great also, Sky get a bad rep but they do it best by far.

miss half game while showing replay after replay then crowd shot the bench then manager then ohhhhh nearly a goal as ball is opposite end of pitch from when you last saw it rinse n repeat

Sky pushing their coverage for next season, looks like they would prefer us to watch at home.

All these extra televised matches will mean more stupid kick-off times and days. So maybe some off us will just give up dragging ourselves to actual matches.

As someone who lives overseas and has only ever been to one game, my opinion doesn’t really matter…but I’m wildly jealous of you all that have the choice!

I had goosebumps (don’t know if that translates?) the entire time I was at the game - it’s like nothing else.

That said, I do like to rewatch passages of play or pause to figure out players off ball movements which can only happen on TV. Sometimes when I read this board, I see match going fans say someone misplayed a lot of balls (for example) but I’ll keep my eyes on it and may happen only 1-2x all game. So I think reactions can be more affected by emotions when you’re at the game. Not bad or good, just interesting observation.

Not when the game is live. There’s nothing like being in the ground. You get to see the whole pitch in front of you so understand tactics better and can see what’s going on everywhere.

However, watching the game back on tele is essential so you get to see things you missed live, things you weren’t quite close enough or at a good enough angle to see.

Plus you don’t get to experience the atmosphere on tele.

But there’s nothing like being there live. I actually get very frustrated watching it on tele.
