It’s hot

Thats literally not true.

'Meat accounts for nearly 60% of all greenhouse gases from food production, study finds.'
That 60% figure is based on intensive agriculture methods. Regenerative agriculture is much better but will not generate the volumes required to sustain current levels of meat consumption. A much better option is a shift towards plant based diets.

I think that means that 60% of greenhouse gases involving food production comes from meat production.

That doesn't include the entirety of emissions where transport is the largest contributor (nearly 25% of the total) so cars, buses and lorries etc. Our energy supply is the second biggest contributor (20%) because we burn gas to keep warm and we burn even more gas for electricity (30-50% of our electricity comes from burning gas).

Agriculture is less than 10% of total emissions so if we eliminated all emissions from agriculture (impossible) then we would reduce our total output by 10% which isn't much. By the time we get there then the population will of grown by 10% so we'll still be emitting more anyway.

This also only includes the UK which contributes less than 1% globally and our output is decreasing so it doesn't really matter..... I really do think we're screwed no matter what we do.

The thing about meat consumption CO2 figures is that it's almost always based on US and South American farming which has cows being fed corn and grain on bare land to fatten them up as much as possible, and because they're eating food you deliver to them you can have a lot more cows/hectare.

The usual British method of farming beef raised and finished on grass means you aren't growing huge swathes of shitty quality grain for feeding the cows, and the very grass they live on counteracts the methane and CO2 emissions - and a lot of our pasture land can't be used for farming crops because it's too hilly for combine harvesters or exposed to such shit weather that you can't get a profitable yield.

This is one of the reasons why these post-Brexit meat trade deals with Brazil and the USA are going to be so bad for the environment. We've got to protect the animal wellfare stadards we have before the tories can gut them completely, and we're all eating shitty meat from half the world away that's being farmed in the worst way possible.
