It’s Quiet 20 - What is the Wirtz that could happen?

All fair points but I just see it differently. I think Kimmich is more aligned with the present and (admittedly more short-term) future needs of the team than any of the others you mention.

The main reason for that is tactical. I think throughout Pep’s time with us, we’ve always been at our best with a defender stepping into the centre of midfield (Delph, Zinchenko, Stones). Whenever we’ve dabbled with wingbacks (start of 17/18) or wide, attacking fullbacks (Mendy in 19/20, Walker than Gvardiol last season, Gvardiol this season) we’ve been nowhere near as good. Aside from Stones, Kimmich looks to me like the best defender-into-midfield-stepper anywhere. That he gives us another option to play more orthodoxly (and at a high-level) as a DM/6 is obviously a bonus.

So I suppose it would look something like this:

———Khusanov—-Dias——Ake——-
(Akanji) (Stones) (Gvardiol)

—————-Kimmich—-Rodri———
(Lewis / Luiz)

That, to my mind, goes back to giving us a proper defensive structure, and the ability to actually move the ball forward properly through the central areas of the pitch.

The other thing that appeals about Kimmich is, precisely, his experience, leadership and game/tactical intelligence. If, as seems plausible, Gundogan, De Bruyne and Bernardo all go in the summer, that is a hell of a lot of footballing intelligence to lose, which is, ultimately, always going to be critical to any Pep team. Kimmich would help mitigate those losses, and he’d be able to step straight into the leadership group with Dias and Rodri.

I obviously take the point on the financial outlay, but I think it clearly worth it.
If we signed Kimmich it would cover the 2 and 6 positions and and although his salary would be very high he does provide versatility. Signing another 6/8 player again provides lots of cover but also allows game time for the new recruits as well as facilitating Rodri to not have to play 50 games a season

Kimmich would be a great signing. It amazes me how many in here don’t want him.

We don’t play with 2 CDMs

I agree tactically and on free Kimmich makes sense but I worry about lack of pace for either CDM or RB.

If he ends up as back up RB and CDM the wages will be an issue

Khusanov and Reis being done early so we can ship Walker off amd get him away from the first team. Clearly an issue.

nah, not havin 'he knows the system' angle coz he was he on preseason for a month 5 years ago.

I still prefer him so far though from the options of whats here or no-one
You're right, I had him being with us for ages not realising he was at girona for 2 years

Think he is a solid option, I thought he would add some physically too but only 5'9" apparently, looked taller to me

I would take Kimmich in a heartbeat. A big upgrade on Lewis.
Has he got enough pace now ? Also what do we do with Rico such a good player but also so frustrating and light weight or holding on to the ball too long think he might end up further forward in time but as yet he doesn’t score enough

If he end ups further forward then we need 2 RB and more long term 8
