I did read that Bah has been told that there will be opportunities for him at City next season. If that is the case, we will have Nunes, Rico, Stones, Akanji, Dias, Khusanov, Reis, Bah, Gvardiol, Ake, and O'Reilly. I don't think that 11 is a realistic number of defenders, and that's without anyone coming in.
I agree but wouldn’t count O’Reilly as a defender, but if we bring in a full back 7 centre backs is too many ,just not sure who leaves ,it would depend mainly on who wants to go as they all have contracts.Same in midfield really if we want to bring a couple in at least 3 need to go from midfield in addition to KDB

Though it appears that big changes are afoot, I wonder if we simply make a couple of select additions, and bed-in these younger players so that they take over in the 2026-2027 season.

Fact of the matter. When Stones and Dias are fit, Dias plays LCB and has done since he joined. End of discussion.
This is a statement of fact.
Stones and AN Other have pretty much always been our best defenders. Unfortunately, Stones cannot play enough for what we need now.
I hope that Reis is able to step into the role of the defender who brings the ball into midfield.

I think so, I wouldn't be that surprised if we only bring in a keeper or maybe two, a fullback and one or 2 midfielders.

Well it could be that O'Reilly and Lewis both move into midfield AND we buy some full-backs. I'm excited to see what transpires.

Think it’s highly likely we buy a left back and right back. Gvadiol looks set to play as a centre back. He has been excellent there. So we need a left back.
Nunes will be binned if we can find someone to take him. In any case, without an injury crisis and Walker imploding, he won’t get a game.

I thought Nunes was one that would go, not so sure now think he could well stay as a back right back.Think the only way we buy 2 full backs is if one is club trained.

I cant see it. He’s a terrible defender. Not even close to the level we need to be at.
Sorry, I absolutely disagree, he is pants..

Keep one eye on porro at spuds especially now vianna is tasked with bringing the players in.

'System is irrelevant'. From the person who brought up Pep's system in the first place.

Talking shite pal.

Fact of the matter. When Stones and Dias are fit, Dias plays LCB and has done since he joined. End of discussion.
System is irrelevant in terms of the LCB positioning, it will always be a left footer out wide like Laporte, Ake and Gvardiol have shown.

Your so daft. End of discussion.

We have simply got away with it..
He’s shite in my opinion.
Well 3 months ago Id have agreed, but I’m comfortable saying the last 3 months he’s shown I could be wrong. Won’t be the first time a players proved many of us wrong won’t be the last. You either haven’t been watching or you have difficulty admitting you might have been wrong. Guess we’ll see next season if Pep decides we were wrong too.

*You're.

Dias played the left sided centre half for years, alongside Stones and laterly Akanji. Dias literally came in and replaced Laporte in the side.

Its not about where he starts, its about where he ends up.

He always has a Laporte, Ake or Gvardiol to his left.

This whole original point of this convo thread was about potentially letting Ake go as City have loads of CBs.

But they are all predominantly right footed, meaning the only actual players suited on the left (in possession) are Gvardiol or Ake.

And hence, we cannot sell Ake without replacing him, Dias, is not, and has never done that role for us in his best form. His left foot isnt good enough for that.

Pep never plays this way, unless something like injuries happened.

So if he plays left sided centre half he has a left back next to him. But he still plays left sided centre half.

Thats not the point.

Its about whatever in possession structure we have, Dias will never be the wide LCB as a preference for Pep due to the passing angles.

Lets use the left footed LB example you just said in a back 4. If the RB tucks in (Peps favourite system past few years), Then Dias in possession shifts to the centre of the back 3, with the LB now the LCB.

Alternatively, John Stones has entered midfield with Dias LCB, but the back 3 is still Dias centre with the left back again as an LCB.

This is what im saying.

This current wingback system would not work with Dias to start at LCB since no change happens to give him a proper left footer next to him, he would have to be the one passing and isnt suited for it.
