I use shoe trees, they’re some of the most essential things I own. Make my shoes last years!I was thinking recently of bygone things that have long since disappeared. Not ephemeral fads like those things that trend at Xmas and are then forgotten, but things that were part of the fabric of everyday life (some youngsters here might never have heard of some of these):
tea cosies....cycle clips..... calves' foot jelly....trouser turn-ups
Manchester's double-decker trams.....gramophone needles.....pound notes
running-boards on cars.......Wall's ice-cream tricycles.....driving gloves
Green Shield stamps.....Woolworth's and MFI stores....coal scuttles
footy fans waving rattles and wearing rosettes....Angel Delight
inkwells in school desks....shoe trees.....stamp albums.....Beechams pills
heavy leather straps to pull open train carriage windows.................
dangly sticky fly-papers........Oxydol washing powder......cinema organs
toasting forks.....fireguards......stone hot-water bottles.......
dubbin to soften football boots.......hand-operated mangles......
M/cr Evening Chronicle.....smoking in cinemas........bus conductresses
detachable shirt collars (needed studs)......Kardomah cafes
petrol station attendants to fill up your tank.......
furry steering-wheel covers.....waiter service in pubs......
Enough already. I could go on but I shan't.
Where has my life gone?
