I’m delighted to share that my new book, It’s All Mick McCarthy’s Fault, is now available on Amazon.

What began with my cousin Mick McCarthy signing for Manchester City when I was eight years old became a lifelong journey following the club through every imaginable high and low.

The book is about much more than football. It’s about identity, confidence, family, resilience, and how sport can completely shape a person’s life.

Over the years, that journey led me from being a young City supporter isolated in the south, to writing for the official Manchester City programme, travelling the world following the club, meeting players I once idolised, and sharing those experiences with my sons.

I’m incredibly proud to finally share this story and would really support any early shares, purchases and reviews which really do make a huge difference with Amazon visibility, especially in the first few days.

Available in hardback, paperback, and Kindle.

I like Mick, his podcast with Tony Pulis ‘ The Managers’ is top notch IMO.

Look forward to giving this a read! Cheers Mark

Here’s the blurb:

When Mark was eight years old, his cousin Mick McCarthy signed for Manchester City — and his life changed forever.

Growing up in a chaotic home in Milton Keynes, Mark had no confidence, no direction, and no football team. Then, almost by accident, Manchester City claimed him. What followed was a lifetime of loyalty, escape, and obsession — through decades of mockery, misery, and “Typical City” heartbreak.

But this is not just a story of suffering for your club. It’s the story of how football can transform a life.

From being abused at school for supporting City in the south, Mark went on to become a part of the club’s story itself:

Over four decades he went from an abused southern Blue to a season ticket holder, travelling the world home and away with his son, following the club he loves. His journey led him to:

– Writing a regular column in the official Manchester City matchday programme

– Featuring alongside Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland in the official 2023/24 kit launch

– Becoming a guest of David Silva at his private resort in Gran Canaria

– Forming close friendships with the City players whose posters once covered his bedroom wall

– Touring supporters’ clubs with his collection of rare match-worn shirts

– Writing two Manchester City books and hosting renowned City quizzes

Through chaos, humour, nostalgia and pure devotion, It’s All Mick McCarthy’s Fault tells the extraordinary true story of how one unexpected transfer turned a frightened child into a man whose life became intertwined with the club he loves.

This is a love letter to football, loyalty and survival — proof that sometimes the team you follow ends up saving you.

When I saw the title of this thread, I reflexively thought it must be the new book of romantic poetry by that Nobel Laureate Roy Keane...thank heaven it's not. Congrats on your fine achievement here.

The photo of you on the front of your book, that was the first city shirt I got for my birthday, can still feel the excitement of seeing the badge and the colour.

Congratulations on another book, I shall be purchasing it in the very near future.

(I had a footballing cousin too. Darron Mcdonough who played for Oldham and Luton, fortunately I didn't become a fan of either of his clubs)

Good luck Mark. I will be buying it over here in the colonies...;) Mick was always one of my favourites. Never let City down. And as a Paddy, I always backed him over Keane in that famous Saipan spat - although as a Corkman, I know some of Keane's family and have played football with some of his friends. But I held firm that he shouldn't have done what he did, despite the slings and arrows...;)

Anyway, best of luck to ya!

Top man thank you and I remember him well.

I will always be extra grateful I wasn’t introduced to Mick during his Barnsley days !!

No offence to Barnsley of course :-)
