If we are replacing Stones, Laporte or Dias I will agree lets bring a top quality defender in now regardless of the World Cup. The issue is keeping the 4th CB happy is near enough impossible even for Pep's managerial abilities.

We aren’t. We’re replacing Ake.

We can pick who we want. They then choose whether they want to come or not.

Put it this way he will get more game time than the extra defender signing. Keeping Ake would be great for us (which I want to happen) but not great for the player.

Ake played in just under half our games last season. One more than John Stones. Who does that make '4th choice btw'. Sure he played less the year before, when he was out injured most of it.

Not advocating keeping Ake btw. It is the right thing to sell him if he is tempted away and Chelsea make the right offer. Replacing him with a capable player, that's all.

No where, anywhere, did I say he doesn't have to be good enough. I said you don't need to spend insane money. Please don't strawman.

So who is this player who is good with his feet especially under pressure for Peps football.who's gonna be good enough for the big games but unlikely to play & City would be able to buy for £40m. Its almost impossible to find that player. Sounds very much like Ake but Chelsea want to offer him more game or we could re sign Garcia from Barca.

Everyone wants to play under Pep and at one of the clubs in the world. It shouldn’t be hard to convince anyone to join. Only situation I can see players being cautious is if they are close to being in their nations World Cup squad and need to play (like ake). Pau is already a starter, Kounde is on the cusp but in it, and Gvardiol is in it. All three would come imo.

Red Bull won't sell Gvardiol this season (similar to us and Bernardo). Maybe Kounde (although linked to both clubs who don't have many quality CB to begin with)

You're not making much sense. You can get a player for 20-40 million. You don't need to spend Gvardiol money AND still have playtime issues with one of your CB's.

I'd love to know who City can sign for £20m to 40m.

It’s not a normal World Cup year though, is it?

It’s about 15 league games before it starts.
